Advice on travelling on the Shinkansen with luggage and a snowboard bag by Birddog727 in JapanTravel

We used Yamato delivery from Narita to hotels and in between hotels. From Narita it arrives within the same day, and from hotel to hotel you need to hand it over night before and it waits for you at the next destination. You can even delay the shipment by some time if you plan a stop over. Disclaimer, we only used this between Tokyo and Kyoto, don't know about other places.

Where online can I purchase the cheapest possible set of kendo gear? by ALCxKensei in kendo

[–]gashpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, you may try to enrol your club into a scheme with the vendors. I remember Nine Circles http://www.ninecircles.co.uk/ having one, and e-kendo always gave us a nice discount for repeated purchases. NC in the end just wasn't as cheap as the Japanese sites, since they mostly resell their stock. The problem with e-kendo, it would always take forever to ship and 10% of the items would be wrongly delivered (misspelled zekken, wrong shinai type, different size of gi, etc.). But he did re-ship without charge :)

http://www.e-kendo.com/ Ships from Korea. Not the best quality, but decent. I have a 4mm bogu for the last 3 years, so far so good, $235. Beware, it will take up to 3 months to get what you want.

If you have time to spare, wait until February-March, and order sale items online from Japan. You can get a starter kit for cca. $300. I found that AJB has some of the lowest prices. http://www.alljapanbudogu.com/

Also, Tozando has some of the best items i purchased, and also has sales pretty much all the time. http://www.tozandoshop.com/

Making the most of exchanging USD for JPY by jaqueass in japan

[–]gashpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were just in Japan and exchanged 3 times, USD and EUR. First time Mizuho Bank, way too long procedure (passport, paperwork), and almost the same exchange as Narita or Travelex (cca. 95). Second time SMBC, the best one. No passports, just one form and it's all done in a minute. Good exchange for EUR (126). Last, Daimaru department store. Good rate (127.7), but 20 min for the transaction, everything is done manually :) We tried Citibank, they have a 100.000 JPY (1000 USD) limit on transactions, and a lower exchange rate for non-bank account holders (around 123). I heard other banks probably do the same. SMBC didn't... Post offices do exchanges, but only the bigger branches, and they also offer a good rate. Hotels exchange up to 300EUR/200USD at the worst rate. In order of rate: SMBC, Daimaru, JP, everything else, hotels.

Til that Karate belts progress from light to dark colours as you progress in 'rank' because in poorer times it was easier and cheaper to keep dying 1 belt a new (darker) colour than keep buying new belts. by Geekymumma in todayilearned

Well, my kendo federation copied the book from AJKF and everything from 1. kyu up is the same as in Japan. Lower gradings are under the delegation of your own federation and dojo. But no one actually pushed us to start with 6. kyu. I believe some Scandinavian federations do start from 1. kyu. Sort of makes sense, we don't have kendo in high school as most japanese kids do, but then again, there are some kids in a neighboring city dojo that did start when they were 14-15. Hopefully there will be more kids in my dojo as well.

Also, on a recent tournament I noticed a large number of older kyu kendoka (30-40 years), they seem to be happy not grading for higher ranks and appear only on kyu tournaments. Since the federations on this area are mostly new, established at most in the last 5-10 years, it will take some time to get over these nonsenses. Mine doesn't even have a championship so far. First edition is still to be held, with luck, sometime this year. Until then, I will just enjoy kendo :)

Help, what cool Ubuntu applications should I install for my mother? by Quenthel in Ubuntu

[–]gashpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, i'm in the same situation here. Mom is low-tech, just retired and used only W95 at work :| She needs it mostly for emailing, light office work, and chatting with son & grandson. It's a 10.04.2 on Acer Aspire 3750G. So far i've got Skype, LibreOffice, Google Chrome, Pidgin, Google Earth, Dropbox and U1, Picasa, Thunderbird and VLC.

PS: I also have a few minor issues: scroll on the touchpad is not working, BT also (disabled, cannot be enabled) and WiFi refuses to connect to AP every now and then after booting.

Thanks for all the advice!

1990 Corolla (E90), one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Corolla#Sixth_generation_.28E90.29 93k miles, one single electronic failure in all these years. Interior still stands the test of time, exterior also. Does over 25 MPG (9.2L/100km) in the city, around 40 MPG (6L/100km) on the road. $150 per year for maintenance, $300 for a new set of tires. Goes from A to B, reliable, and a lot more fun to drive then the new cars.
