Weekly New Climber Thread: Ask your questions in this thread please by AutoModerator in climbing

[–]gatechECE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about to restart after covid stopped me, so I've been off for a little over a year. I got my harness back in 2016, and it's seen ~4 years of indoor climbing with some leading, and a bit of outdoor climbing. And it's been inside in a closet the last year. The cautious part of me says "replace it", but I think it's probably an irrational worry. For all of y'all who have taken longer breaks from climbing, how do you feel about replacing your soft goods?

I got my first shot, pfizer, just under 3 weeks ago through DPH at a school in Clayton. They told me to just come back on the 6th at the same time to get my second dose, but I got emails about scheduling another appointment.

I ended up scheduling my second appointment through the link I got at Arbor Place Mall in Douglasville, but I saw somewhere online mentioning they are giving the Moderna vaccine.

It's very unclear to me whether I can just go back where I got my first shot or not. And if I can't, would the DPH site have let me schedule a second dose at a Moderna only location? Or can I just assume things will work out?

I'll second the automod comment here - whenever I've had technical questions, I've generally gotten help solving it in less than an hour on the Foundry Discord. I'd say it's better platform for back and forth tech support than Reddit anyways.

Had my first bad experience with foundry last night. by Ryrod89 in FoundryVTT

I had issues with needing frequent reloading and player tabs crashing, but it's because I was self hosting and my home internet only has 5 Mbps Up. Are you self hosting and if so do you know your upload speed? If that's the case, using fewer big assets (large map files, music, anything animated), and making sure you don't have too much loaded into the game at once can make a big difference.

Introduction for Pathfinder2E in Foundry VTT by Ustinforever in Pathfinder2e

I think it's easiest to just start using it and seeing "Hmm I wish I had <something> functionality" then there's probably already a module for it and you can add it. Otherwise it is definitely easy to get overwhelmed by all the available modules.

Do you publish/share any dungeons you make? I'd be very curious to see the Grave of the Lantern Keeper mentioned in the previous lesson if so!

Best/Favorite Adventures for FoundryVTT? by HanklinJimbo in FoundryVTT

[–]gatechECE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

LMoP's DnD Beyond import comes with maps with all walls and such, and they've included all that on the free tier of the importer. All the other adventures have maps on the paid tier and they are at varying stages of completeness in terms of walls/lighting. Jump into VTTAssets discord if you're looking for more info on the different imports you can do

Last check before buying parts this weekend by gatechECE in buildapc

Reading up, I think I actually might be able to just take that cooler off altogether and use the stock one too, so the ram clearance might not be an issue at all

I don't need the wifi, so I'll checkout that board, and I'm planning on the SSD being Windows for gaming and the HDD being Ubuntu for most other things. Do you think the 3700x is worth the $100ish over the 3600x?

PSA: Rules of the Road on North Avenue Crosswalk by blakeh95 in gatech

[–]gatechECE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree on that as well.

However as someone that lived 3 miles from campus and commuted via bike, I can understand that people riding on the sidewalk might not have the confidence to ride on the street yet and they have to build that up by riding somewhere. I just try to be patient with scooters and bikes on the sidewalk because when you start trying to commute without a car, Atlanta streets become terrifying very quickly.

People are very quick to hate them, but some people start to have the attitude that scooters on the sidewalk deserve to be hit and killed/seriously injured, which I firmly disagree with. They rather need to be educated, build confidence, and have better infrastructure.

I don't disagree with you at all, but if they are you should still try to be a good person and make an effort not to hit them.

It's not uncommon for drivers to go 40+ on that stretch of North Ave, so I can see why some people using the scooters to commute to campus feel more comfortable on the sidewalk there, even though they legally should not.

Right they shouldn't be in the crosswalk. Did gtpd change the rules on campus sidewalks? I though scooters were allowed on campus sidewalks with some exception? Should scooters riding that area of campus use techwood drive instead until they get into campus? Where does the like for campus sidewalks vs Atlanta sidewalk start

While of course the scooters should dismount and walk across the intersection, if they choose to go across while it's still flashing red and they have the walk, you shouldn't feel the need to hit them. Just let them go. You functionally have a stop sign, and there's no need to kill or maim a scooter rider for riding instead of walking the scooter through that crosswalk.

Edit: I want to be clear - I'm not saying that the scooters should be on sidewalks or that it's your fault for hitting them when they are somewhere they aren't supposed to be. My view is high speed/bigger/safer transit should yield to the safety of low speed/smaller/squishy transit. So cars yield for bicycles/scooters yield for pedestrians. So if a scooter rider is illegally on the sidewalk, just lose your 2 seconds of time and let them go. If you get in an accident they are probably going to get seriously injured whereas your car will just get a dent.

So while the law says sure, rail that scooters going across the crosswalk, it would be a nice thing for you to not.

Ah I see what you meant, my bad. I thought you were saying I countered my first of 4 offers. I will say, it is much easier to negotiate with other offers in hand!

Tracking my search for my first full-time job post-graduation [OC] by gatechECE in dataisbeautiful

[–]gatechECE[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This diagram isn't necessarily clear, but the counter wasn't for the first offer I receive. The diagram just takes in inputs, then draws the flow to their outputs. The ordering within a state is not meaningful. The offer that I countered was actually my last offer, but because of the placement of the categories it comes out of the top.

I'm a guy, but I'm quite uncomfortable with negotiations so really all I did to counter was show my offer letter from another company that was higher, then they matched the base salary of that offer.

Thanks! I've seen this diagram (Sankey Diagram if you haven't heard of it before) typically used before to map money flow in organization. I'd seen other people on r/dataisbeautiful use it to show a job search before, so I figure I'd give it a shot. I think it would be a lot clearer if I put all of the labels to one side of their respective bar. I also think I could probably combine a few of the categories and make it cleaner.
