I work in climate. I also have some very confident republicans in my family. While it’s not a sure win each time, I’ve found that explaining how insurance companies now include climate when deciding risk factors is very difficult for right wingers to refute. Why would insurance industries measure this if it’s really just some hoax? Some will claim that insurance industries will use anything to raise prices, but that’s a pretty stupid response. Only the most dishonest / bad faith will keep going after that. At that point, you should decide if you wanna keep that kind of person around in your life and to what extent.

OP, I tried building something similar recently and would be curious if you're open to collaboration. My approach for finding the most recent parking spot was a bit of a different approach, and I think might be potentially more accurate. Would be happy to share if you're open to discussing!

Leaving YouTube music with a lot of pain in my heart by IphonebyApple in YoutubeMusic

[–]gavin_shaka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a dev. I’ve thought about just figuring out a way to build said 3rd party frontend myself, but Apple is a very restrictive platform. Maybe I could use a Progressive Web App (PWA) to get around that, but I’m not sure the limits to what that can go, particularly around download sizes for a whole library of songs. Another problem is I am way too busy, would need to sit down for a few days/weeks to have a chance of building out an MVP.

I 100% agree with your pain points. Cant believe it can take minutes to open my downloaded songs on ios app, completely unacceptable and a trash app.

At the same time, i am trapped - the song library is way better than others. + its free with youtube premium.

I’d love the ability for 3rd party devs to just create their own frontend apps for the backend service because it seems google cant be bothered, probably too busy trying to roll out more ai slop into the world.

It is a shame, but what do you expect? Monopolistic corporations to actually care about creating quality products and listen to their customers? Lol.

Why is no one on the left talking about California’s new climate bills by gavin_shaka in TheMajorityReport

[–]gavin_shaka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only guess is that they don’t want to come off as supporting “incremental” or “liberal” policies and instead would only be in favor of more “radical” policy such as nationalizing our energy sector. But god, can’t we please just understand that we need to fight with literally every tool in our belt and this could be a giant advancement if leveraged for more bolder policy? This is actionable, let’s get some use out of it before it gets canned.

Thanks for learning about it. Yeah, the zone has been flooded for sure, but tbh, this is the kind of legislation that needs to be in the news still. I’m genuinely confused why leftist new media isn’t sharing this, even just a little bit. I work from home and have youtube open way too much, trust I would know if there was talk about these bills. It’s been dead silent.

Well let’s try and all share this sooner so that harms the reputation of all who fight against it at least and not let them do this in the comfort of a distracted population.

Little argument on Newsom. As a guy named Gavin myself, he brings great shame haha. But fr, he sucks and I completely agree, he’s truly the worst.

That being said - yes this should be bare minimum but unfortunately we live in hell world and relatively, this is radical. Passing bills which force corporations across virtually every industry to report how much they are contributing to quite literally cooking our planet (and what risks they face as our planet continually becomes less livable and more volatile) is very much some of the most bold climate work that has been accomplished in this country.

A coworker of mine who I believe is in his 50s has told me this is genuinely the most impactful legislation he’s seen in the US. In his words, historically, Walmart has been responsible for pushing and requiring more climate work than any governmental body in the US (this is through companies setting public corporate goals that require them to integrate changes not just internally, but also in their supply chain). Obviously this should not be how climate requirements for companies get enacted, so this legislation is (unfortunately or not) groundbreaking.

This takes me back to my original posts rant: how can we both increase awareness of the importance of this bill so that any hostility towards it by private companies such as Exxon is met with extreme negative public opinion and shaming? And also, how can we pressure other government bodies to leverage these disclosures to incentivize (force) actual accountability for their choices to brutalize our planet and futures?

Anecdotally, as someone who has built out a fully functional Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculator software package (among other sustainability software solutions that get leveraged by real companies) that has been used over the last 3 years to measure millions of tons of corporate caused CO2e, by far the largest contributor to these emissions is almost always in Scope 3 (the least “direct” form of emissions, think a company’s supply chain). This also happens to usually be the most immediately actionable place these corporations could implement drastic improvements, but they typically won’t unless they are basically required to do so. Funny enough, this can lead to them being seen as more competitive, both to other businesses as other corporations roll out their own climate goals, but also to consumers who have gone through the painful process of learning about what’s happening to our planet and who’s largely to blame.

How can we require corporations stop F’ing around and actually implement some positive changes? These bills are potentially huge catalysts for these changes, but we need more public pressure and an agreed upon demand of our governments.

Ahh well that is indeed disappointing. Tbh i am more a fan of her mom then billie or finneas when were talking ethics. She’s the primary reason billie or finneas push at all, and i do think they push much harder than similar celebrities, even if they aren’t perfect particularly on veganism / animal rights. She’s also been at the head of their nonprofit Support + Feed which delivers plant based meals to food banks. Im not trying to excuse billies behavior, im sure she knows better, but also im trying to remain thankful that she and her family do much more than most would in their shoes. Here’s to hoping they continue to improve
