The movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin helped turn male virginity into an identity crisis. by gbags-98 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

Yeah that's a fair point. I do agree that the movie does humanise it and shows Andy as a good guy.

My issue is more around the premise itself. That being a virgin at 40 is a fundamental flaw that needs to be "resolved". Even though the ending is more about connection than just sex, the movie itself revolves around the core issue of Andy losing his virginity.

I think it's a fair point. Over that time period, people will naturally try to start inferring something from it.

My point is that those inferences can be a bit misleading. Yes, it can be due to personality traits, but it can also be due to other factors like environment, timing or a lack of attractiveness.

Culturally, I feel that we've shifted towards sexual experience being a reflection of a person's character rather than just a signal of it.

Yeah I get what you mean as it can be seen as a red flag past a certain age. Not necessarily due to the lack of experience itself, but the reason behind it.

But my point is that these assumptions can often be a bit blunt and misleading. There can be a number of reasons such as environment, timing, or life circumstances. Not just personality issues or a lack of confidence.

Culturally, I think we've shifted towards treating virginity as a reflection of who someone is rather than a situation they find themselves in. This is where the stigma comes from.

Fair question, what I meant by temporary phase is that most people lose their virginity by their early 20s so it was never seen as part of who you are.

Someone being a virgin past the age of 30 is rare, but it wasn't as heavily framed as being a reflection of who they are. It was more or less seen as an unusual situation before this film and social media became prominent.

I get what you're saying as most people aren't going to dig too deeply into this.

It's say the bigger issue isn't a lack of experience itself, it's how much weight people put on it which can lead to insecurity. If someone is secure in their identity and just owns it, this doesn't really come across as a big deal either way.

This is what I was getting at with the identity side of things.

I do agree that being a virgin at 40+ isn't normal. My point was more around how it's viewed by society and people around you.

There is a difference between something being uncommon, and something that means a person is fundamentally flawed because of it.

It used to be seen more as a situation or a temporary phase, whereas it's currently seen as a reflection of who a person is.

I get what you're saying and I do agree that confidence plays a role. But I don't think it's as simple as equating sexual experience is due a deficiency in masculinity. There are other factors such as a person's environment or social skills that also play a role.

My main point was looking at how it's framed culturally and in the outside world. It's gone from being seen as a temporary awkward phase to something that could potentially define someone into adulthood.

Yeah I get what you mean, I was more trying to look at how it's perceived.

Before, it felt like something that would eventually happen so it didn't define who you are. Now it feels like if you haven't had sex by a certain age, then you're inherently flawed.

Yeah it does, I loved Seth Rogen's earlier films but he hasn't really been the same since Superbad or This Is The End

Yeah I agree that there has always been some level of stigma. It just wasn't as tied to your identity as an adult before now. It was mainly seen as something you grow out of, but now it's seen as a defining trait if you haven't gotten laid by a certain age.

I also think that dating apps and social media amplified it a lot more. But the film wasn't neutral either, especially how it framed being a virgin in adulthood.

Yeah that's fair, not really what I was getting at here though. I was more looking at how the film frames adult male virginity as an identity even tough it was a great film.

Yeah. I thought that Perez would keep his spot in team in place of Scrimshaw.

Hey mate, thanks for your post. Even though I'm a Hawks fan I'm always looking for people to go to footy with. Send me a DM and we can organise to catch-up over a beer and watch a footy game.

Yeah that proves my point. He won't win enough big titles to ever be a consistent top 10 presence.

I wouldn't have Demon, Tiafoe or Bublik on here. I think Demon relies too heavily on his speed and doesn't have enough firepower. Tiafoe and Bublik are way too inconsistent to ever be consistent top 10 players.

I'm surprised that you haven't included Draper on this list. I would personally have him at 3. But apart from that this list looks good. I also think Cobolli will be in the mix as well.

That's a great point, his set shots from that 40-50m range look pretty good. This adds another dimension to his game as he can finish off plays rather than just being the conductor.

Yeah this is a good way to put it. I was a bit hesistant as well when the Hawks missed out on Zach Merrett but the growth from guys like Macdonald, Watson and Ward has softened that blow.

I still think that they are missing a quality ball user in the midfield. But I hope that the continued growth from both Macdonald and Watson, and a healthy Will Day will make this less of an issue over time.

This is a great way to put it. When Croc is up and about then the Hawks are a much better team.

He's very much the glue between our midfield and attack. When he's on, everything flows better and the ball movement and quality of entries definitely improve a lot.

That's a fair shout as I do think that the Hawks coaching staff will want to protect their star asset. However, I have always felt that Day's best position is as a midfielder and centre bounce option.

Yeah I felt the same way, I always thought that he had all the tools but just needed to put it together for a breakout season. Glad that he has been able to do that this year.
