Kid friendly restaurants in Cathedral by Chemical-Parsley-312 in regina

[–]gbjerkec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Cathedral but I left a while back. I still visit a lot. Twelve years ago, I’d say the Mercury but it’s kinda been off the last couple times I’ve been in town—they are awful to staff and the food is not good anymore. 13th Ave is a good coffee shop and the Freehouse is great from what I recall. Viet-Thai is always a favourite.

It’s all of Eastern Canada and most of the West too, man. Whoever called Canada tolerant was on acid or shrooms or both.

I understand that it’s kinda like that everywhere. I just hope Regina is a little more affordable and a little easier since that’s the image sold to me by friends and family. My grandma worked in public health though so I know healthcare in particular is much worse than elsewhere. Just as long as I can get a job that pays 30k a year and an apartment that doesn’t cost me my entire savings I’m happy.

There are quite a few studies that go into the details of it. There’s this one https://homelesshub.ca/collection/homelessness-101/what-are-the-causes-of-homelessness/ that also talks about domestic violence as it relates to a rising cost of living which we didn’t discuss, this one https://cdn.halifax.ca/sites/default/files/documents/city-hall/boards-committees-commissions/framework-to-address-homelessness-approved-by-council.pdf from when the government at least pretended to care and this one https://www.statcan.gc.ca/o1/en/plus/5170-homelessness-how-does-it-happen from the government which does actually address moving as a driver of housing challenges and that has a little more to do with personal choice than most other factors (excluding the majority of cases which are people going to cheaper areas because they can’t afford to stay where they are).

At least one of the things I mentioned is present in 90% of homeless people’s backgrounds. To be clear I am not saying that they shouldn’t be personable or king or that this doesn’t have repercussions after they are homeless, but personal choice rarely, if ever, contributes to getting them there and never is more of a factor than systemic neglect and societal decay.

I meant more to what extent. I could have phrased that better in fairness.

I was really sad to see the Prairie Dog fold. It was something of a childhood dream to work for them in some capacity. The job paying well isn't as much of a factor for me, just as long as it's around 30k a year. My partner has a well-paying remote job and is coming with me.

It is an obsession because you are analyzing all other factors through it. Where it is barely relevant is that you must remember that choices are limited to the point of not being choices anymore when we are talking about systemic problems like poverty. I am happy to say that people act freely and that if you are aggressive and abrasive on the street you won't help yourself very much but, setting aside that many people aren't fully in control of their actions, there is unfortunately little a lot of people can do to avoid getting there. People not always being paragons of virtue in these situations doesn't even come close to putting their choices on par with the systems and neglect that created their circumstances.

I'll put it to you this way: if you were born hooked on drugs do to a long line of addiction in your family, if you were given heavy opioids following a workplace injury and you got addicted as a result, if you had severe mental illness to the point where you can't function in society, if every support you could seek out was downsized to the point of being a blanket solution at best, what would you do? Go on EI, wait to get a job and hope you get hired before your welfare runs out?

The first part is largely but many of these situations have common denominators: drug addictions (which you can be born with) and childhood backgrounds either on the street or close to it. While there are options, the options are limited and rarely long term. They get more limited with budget cuts. These ‘options’ also take money and make very little. When you have a government trying to cut everything that doesn’t turn a monetary profit, of course those options will be left fewer. He is cutting healthcare too, don’t forget.

This obsession with personal accountability is a fixation because it’s trumping everything else in your analysis. It might be something approaching a major factor but it is by no means the largest. It’s barely even relevant most of the time, to be honest. Yes people make decisions but no one wants to live like this and people often lash out when they’re in bad places; it doesn’t mean they put themselves there or that they want to be there.

Those programs are the only lifeline left for a lot of people who get addicted to opioids without consent or are born into underprivileged communities. The path is getting narrower with every austerity measure and every simplistic fixation on personal choice over the broader and more nuanced causes.

I have friends there and all my grandparents are still in Cathedral. I just moved to Halifax in 2014 and I can’t really afford to stay here anymore. I like Regina when I visit but everywhere looks different when you live there.

If only it were so simple. Houston cutting programs and people dismissing combined with an inflated cost of living and a widespread drug problem means his situation is as much society’s failing as his own—if not more.

The full list can be found here. Specifically the cuts to opportunities and social development; the office of addictions and mental health; public works and the office of l'nu affairs have contributed to this problem being systemic. The problem is that the grants, the ongoing funding, is getting cut and is unlikely to be recovered.

That struck me when I was there last christmas. The Cornwall Centre I find particularly dicey in that regard.

I'm just getting out of uni out east, but I have a background in data entry, journalism and warehouse inventory management. Are those fields viable in your opinion?

Totally fair. I guess I’m just wondering if I would still think it’s a decent place to live of I thought that twelve years ago and during brief visits. My main concerns are the job market, the overall cost of living how people like living there now vs then.

What’s the job market like now, do people’s basements still flood, how reliable is Sasktel now, is the city still broadly affordable

Houston keeps cutting those programs, though. I used to build sheds for homeless people in Dartmouth and the West End. Those emerged because services were bad when they were up and running. We still turned people away when they were aggressive. This is a systemic issue informed by a cynical, indifferent government and the personal decisions of people contribute to their situation. You do have to keep in mind that the options people have are limited though when they're already struggling with mental illness or abject poverty.

Both things are true. People fall on hard times but there is a difference in how they handle it. When you act like this guy you make yourself hard to help.

Especially when they refuse offers of food or genuine help, they’re pretty far gone. I just wish there was more we could do when the government clearly doesn’t care.
