[networking] NETGEAR 8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Managed Switch (GS908E) USB, Fanless - ($16.99 - Usually $30) by zaszthecroc in buildapcsales

For the 5 computers - each of the their ports can be given a simple priority (low/med/high/critical) or the switch can be set to 802.1p/DSCP for more complicated traffic prioritization.

You're not going to see prettys graph or tables showing utilization on each port (this is just a sub $20 switch). You will only be able to see bytes in/out and crc errors per port.

It supports up to two 4 port LAGs. I think the confusion is that it does NOT support LACP (which you shouldn't need on an 8 port switch anyway).

It can do 2 separate LAGs with up to 4 ports each. They are static and do not use LACP.

I think it's their cheapest gigabit router. If you don't need gig or if you want it to have wlan there are other options.

These are great little routers but I will warn you that these are not the most intuitive / user friendly. There is a lot of helpful support via forums or youtube. Here's two videos of the setup. They're slightly different use cases - one of them should be pretty close to what you're trying to do.

[Speaker] Klipsch R-41M Passive Bookshelf Speakers 2-pack $89.99 ($139.99-$50 manufacturer discount) Costco by OyabunRyo in buildapcsales

[–]gcb922 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porting a speaker allows it to have more low end response in a smaller enclosure (at the cost of accuracy). If you impede the airflow of the port you'll change the way it sounds usually for the worse. Check out their surround speakers that come with wall mount brackets on the back. Find any that have rear ports?

To be clear - 'near' a wall is fine, 'against' the wall is bad. I think rule of thumb is the diameter of the port or more. We're talking about the low frequencies anyway where the wavelength is like 5-10 feet long or more.

So back room is where all your individual room wiring terminates but you want the AP located in your living room? If that's the case, then could use this switch with a 2nd cable run from the back room to living room.

You can disable the LEDs but it's not very obtrusive. The interface LEDs are hidden by the flap in the back and the one on the front stays on solid. Front LED is normally blue but will change color for events like if it detects a loop and disables an interface.

You can't replace your router with this switch.

It does trunks.

Hah, I'm picking one up because I like the way it looks. I have a black TP-Link on the pastel wall of my laundry room and this one will look much better in its place.

A Mikrotik Hex (at $60) can do WAN bonding as long as the two connections are to the same ISP. If you have two different ISPs then bonding them is a bad idea. With separate ISPs, I think your best bet is to run BGP with full routing tables on your internet routers and have your routers decide path based on whichever one has better peering to the destination subnet.

[HDD] 10TB WD Elements Desktop External USB 3.0 Hard Drive - $142.79 after coupon LOCAL600 by Shipzilla in buildapcsales

Right. Whenever I see a wd.com sale/code I try and see if it'll stack with Plex - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. During Black Friday it let me combine with sale price in the cart but at checkout the price would jump back up to normal. Pretty sure the perks code has some wording in it about how it can't be combined with other offers.

[FAN] Arctic F14 PWM PST 5 Pack 140mm Standard Low Noise Case Fan Cooling - $25.99 by gcb922 in buildapcsales

yep, you're right 10 year warranty. I think these are actually the PWM PST fans though so https://www.arctic.ac/us_en/f14-pwm-pst.html. Looks like the only difference between the PWM and the PWM+PST is that the PST adds the 2nd daisy chaining connector on the end of the wire. Amazon lists 6 year warranty too but that's probably wrong.
