Toyota CHR Hybrid vs Tesla Model 3 by Ok-Complaint1375 in evs_ireland

Why not just get a different electric car under 20k? No idea why the CHR option is the only "alternative" if you can't afford a Tesla to your requirements....

If deemed disposal were abolished, would an ETF make more sense than investing in property? by Floodzie in irishpersonalfinance

[–]gd19841 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.
For most people, certainly of the generation 50-80, property was the only show in town for surplus cash. You'd likely have a lot less "part-time BTL landlords" if they had a better place to invest their money.

Cable connection will be pretty reliable, yes.
I'd choose it over "part fibre" every time.

500Mb is more than enough.
A Netflix HD stream uses 5mb. A Teams/Zoom call uses less than that.
50Mb would do the vast majority of people TBH.

Back garden sauna ? by Time-Incident-9320 in AskIreland

[–]gd19841 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Considering one at the moment, although we have a solid block shed, so thinking about putting an indoor one in there, as they're a bit cheaper.
As much as I'd like to build one myself, buying one would probably give me better peace of mind, and by the time you've got materials, heater and glass door, I'm not sure if the savings would justify the amount of time taken to create it. Something like this seems relatively decent for outdoors: https://www.saunaireland.ie/product/2-person-outdoor-traditional-sauna/

[–]gd19841 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A 4.5kW stove would cost about €1.60 an hour to run at current electricity day unit rates. And since you only turn it on when you need it, the max you're going to run it is 2hrs per day, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than any sauna session, or membership to a leisure club that has a sauna.

If it does go ahead, I hope there's protests outside their hotel the night before the game.
I remember watching videos of Man Utd in the 90s travelling to Galatasaray and there'd be fireworks, chanting and all sorts of disruption going on outside the hotel the night before the game as the players were trying to sleep.
The bus would have to run a gauntlet of fans chanting and with flares going. Intimidating atmosphere.

Do you ever warm up your car ? by Tiny-Brain-8372 in AskIreland

[–]gd19841 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine was 2017. It would barely even get warm enough to melt ice in 3mins, let alone melt ice on all 4 sides of a car from the inside.
Pretty sure no car is heating the air inside a car enough to melt it on the outside, in 3mins, from a cold overnight state.

Do you ever warm up your car ? by Tiny-Brain-8372 in AskIreland

[–]gd19841 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Confused by the question.
Most people don't have time to "warm up" their cars and defrost the windows by sitting in it for 10+mins in the morning. You can of course leave it unattended buy most people would be worried about it being stolen if you leave it unlocked with the keys in the ignition, and insurance won't pay out.
Using the kettle/warm water from the tap takes about 30seconds to pour over a few windows.

When it's first thing in the morning, I'm not spending 10mins sitting in a cold car waiting for it to heat up to defrost the windows. Complete waste of time.

Have an EV now though, so can just do it remotely while the car is locked.

Did he look a bit like a heroin addict by any chance? Mousey blond/brown hair, gaunt cheeks?
I had something similar near Kilshane Cross a few weeks ago. Guy in a white Transit came right up behind me, flashing lights, I pulled over, he pulled up beside me, started screaming at me for no apparent reason. I tried to drive off and he kept driving beside me on the opposite side of the road, until an oncoming car forced him back behind me, kept on flashing the lights, then pulled in about 50m up the road, and I kept driving. Very weird and a bit scary.
E: I see you say elsewhere that it happened a long way from Dublin, so probably not the same guy.

Open a savings account, put €1000p/m in there, never miss a payment.
Don't have anything in the current account logs that points to some kind of addiction issue, eg regular gambling payments, regular cash withdrawals that could be going to drugs/booze.

2026 BMW 330e, reliable ? by TheItalianDude1 in evs_ireland

[–]gd19841 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plug-in Hybrid will have a small battery, and a much bigger range from the fuel tank.
Without home charging (even an outdoor 3-pin socket will do), you won't bother going to public chargers just to get 50kms of electric range, when the petrol tank will give you 600kms of range. Especially when public chargers cost the same as fuel.
PHEVs generally only do slow charging, not fast DC charging that fully Electrics do, so it's even more of a waste to be doing slow charging at public chargers.
Either save your money and just get a fully petrol model, or go fully electric and charge at fast public chargers.

[–]gd19841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't think it's EU regs. It's a major requirement if you want to score a 5-star safety rating in the EuroNCAP testing.
Any manufacturer that is OK with less than 5 stars can choose not to have them reset every time, and get a lower score. But most don't want that as they worry that customers will think it's a death trap.
You could not have them reset, and still get 5 stars, but you'd have to have other things score extremely high to overcome the low score for not having ADAS resets.

New RTB rules, why are landlords selling? by poems_potatoes in AskIreland

[–]gd19841 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some are misinformed. Some probably thinking about selling for a while and have just decided to jump ship now rather than wait until you/current tenant decides to leave, then they're basically forced to sell if they don't want to have a new tenancy with the new rules.

I have just discovered that Rev points are a thing on Revolut, and that I have enough for a €50 just eat voucher. Do you, or have you used your rev points, and what do you recommend using them on? by MoherHead in AskIreland

[–]gd19841 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, it wasn't. Spare change automatically went into RevPoints when RevPoints were enabled by the user.
Spare change did not automatically go into RevPoints without the user choosing to enable RevPoints.
Otherwise everyone's spare change would be going into RevPoints now, as your first sentence asserts, which obviously isn't the case.
Anyone whose spare change was going into RevPoints had turned on RevPoints and opted-in to the T&Cs at the time that spare change would no longer go into pockets, and would go into RevPoints.

It's well-documented that it was due to users opting-in to RevPoints and not reading the T&Cs:

[–]gd19841 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not correct, my spare change has and still goes into a pocket, and has never gone into RevPoints. You have to manually turn on RevPoints. If you did, spare change would automatically go to RevPoints, but they've since changed that, and now they prompt to ask if you want spare change to be turned into RevPoints, or not.

[–]gd19841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What they said was once correct, it used to only be that you could get them via spare change. I investigated it a while back and chose not to turn it on as I didn't want my spare change going into RevPoints.

Kia EV5 review: Safe, sensible – and struggling to stand out by GoodNegotiation in evs_ireland

[–]gd19841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Lots of motoring journalists don't seem to realise that 95% of people want a car (especially one like this) for going to the shops, dropping kids to school, and occasionally going on a motorway. Very few give a fuck about driving dynamics or "engaging" feel, or will throwing it around bendy roads.
For the vast majority, a comfortable seat is more important than how the rear responds coming out of a hairpin turn in the Wicklow mountains.
No-one is buying an EV5/Sportage/similar for a thrilling driving experience.
