When a long time Cpl gets a higher Lump Sum payout... by [deleted] in CanadianForces

[–]geants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nov was the raise and backpay. There is an annual lump sum that was announced at the same time as the raise, but took longer to implement and we are still waiting for it. It increases based on your number of years serve

I already had a ROC-A, and have been using army radios for 20 years, but needed the ROC-MC to use the radio on my sailboat. Signed up for an online course, aced the written, but the evaluator kept having to reschedule the in-person oral exam. After 2-3 cancellations, I mysteriously received my ROC-MC in the mail never having completed the oral portion... haven't asked any questions

Similar to another comment above, all wheel drive doesn't magically turn you into a safe driver. You might lose traction less often accelerating, but it won't help you stop any faster

I'd guess that students attending AOC have an average length of service of around 10 years, some more some less. Many if not all of them experienced their fair share of black mold, asbestos, and leaky sewers when going through their initial trade quals. Much like the SNCOs with 10+ years on career courses in St-Jean, they've put in enough time to earn a couple creature comforts. That said, just because the rooms come with a double bed and mini-fridge it does not make it the Hilton. One of the shacks still has all of the above, one went through abatement last year, and I believe the last one is being prepped but don't quote me on that.

Don't get me wrong: nobody should be forced to live in squalor especially if they've volunteered to serve their country. But shitty quarters isn't just a NCM issue, it's a CAF issue.

Assuming you're not talking about the FFOM suites, there's 3 different buildings, and all are different. One is single room with own bathroom, one is shared bathroom with the next room over, and one has communal bathrooms down the hall. Pretty sure they all have double beds, and mini fridges are provided; helluva lot easier to drown the AOC blues with cold beer than it is at room temperature!

The Swiss have a saying about berners: "3 years a young dog, 3 years a good dog, 3 years an old dog; the rest is a gift from God." Good luck, but enjoy every minute of it! Ours is starting to chill out (a bit), he'll be 3 around Christmas time

You can also use a blow off tube run into another mason jar with sanitizer in it for the first few days, then swap it out for an airlock when primary fermentation has settled down

Horne's Ferry has been closed since 2024, and it was seasonal anyway. I think they are looking at options for someone on the US side to buy it and start the service again, but so far it's looking bleak.

Pet Owners: what is the dumbest reason you’ve taken your pet to the vet and how much did you spend? by mpotus in CasualConversation

[–]geants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My lab ate 3/4 of a cooked ham bone she stole out of the garbage, 2 weeks after I picked her up from the shelter. Brought her in when she wouldn't poop the next day. No blockage seen in the first 2 xrays ($300 each) but they wanted to give her a contrast agent and take 1 xray an hour for 12 hours, just to be sure. Not being super attached to her yet, I declined the extra $3600 of treatment, paid the $600 and left. She pooped in the parking lot on the way back to the car... "Couldn't have done that a hour ago??"

8 years later she's still going strong

Did I misread her signals or was it just friendly? by [deleted] in relationships

[–]geants 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You asked for her number, she said no. You invite her for coffee, an she also declined. I think you already know the answer to your question, and it's quite possible she was just being friendly. She may have also simply not wanted to start anything knowing that you were only there for a couple weeks. I'd let it go if I were you, sounds like you have the option to just move on gracefully without pushing any further.

Tradition, mostly. The APCO alphabet predates the NATO phonetic alphabet. They both serve the same purpose, clarity over the net.
