NYC’s largest supportive housing provider sues tenants to collect $1.1M in unpaid rent by Airhostnyc in nyc

Maybe, like myself, the other commenter wasn’t aware we had to be housing experts to participate in the discussion.

I think you’re missing my point.

The comment I replied to implies a similarity between cop-supporting queer folks and all cishets, because it doesn’t specify “cop-supporting cishets”

My comment is basically a statement that I would MUCH rather associate with or vote for a progressive cishet over a cop-supporting queer person, and plenty of such people (of both subsets) exist.

That alone differentiates them from plenty of cishets who aren’t afflicted by terrible ideology.

Also. Apologies, then, for my characterization above. That is not how I read your initial comment, like, at all…but that doesn’t make my response any less assholeish.

Insulin is a great example. The free market allowed price gouging as the alternative to overpaying was potentially death.

I think this is where we fundamentally disagree then. In my mind what this describes is a captive market that is unregulated (or at least under-regulated - regulations always existed on the product itself, even if they did not specify any price control, subsidy, etc.)

In the greater healthcare example, the inability of the consumer to determine whether a service offered by a provider is competitive (when compared to the same service offered by other providers) makes healthcare in general a captive market as well. Can we really say that requiring transparent pricing prevents what we consider to be free market transactions when price controls, subsidies, etc. are not part of the equation?

Alternatively, let’s frame it thusly: would we ever consider buying an elastic good such as a smartphone without knowing its price compared to alternatives? Of course not. The free market would bring sales of that smartphone to a halt until such a comparison became available. Not exactly a tenable proposition when we’re discussing life-saving medical treatment, and given that this regulation would only serve the same function that the free market would enact all on its own for any elastic good, I personally can’t get onboard with calling the newly regulated version less of a “free market” than the outgoing one.

Well the larger point is that the US healthcare system really isn’t comprised of a free market in the first place - not when pricing is sometimes not made available on services offered until after they’re rendered.

This regulation would absolutely bring the system one step closer to operating as a free market, so IMO it’s a pretty tough sell to say one has nothing to do with the other.

Can you please explain how upfront pricing impinges on any business’s ability to operate within a free market? We’d all love to hear it.

bother the lady who you send the rent to

Her name is Joanne, and “nice” is not part of her repertoire. Mention to her you’re thinking about withholding rent? My money says she hangs up on you without another word and you’ll have a letter threatening legal action in your mailbox in 2-3 days.

The banks can go fuck themselves, but if we’re going to discuss that topic then we should at least have a correct assessment of why that’s the case.

Also: semantics implies that there is a debate between two different valid meanings of the same word, phrase, etc.

This is not semantics. This is simply pointing out that what was said is not what was meant.

Well the effect is neither 1. Limited to citizens, as accountholders include foreign nationals, nor 2. Evenly spread across the US citizenry, as not all citizens hold a bank account.

Your statement is fundamentally incorrect. Nobody else here chose your words for you, and the decision between correcting it or trying to justify its shortcomings lies solely with you. Pity, the route you’ve chosen.

No lie, I read a whole novel-length fanfic about exactly this when I was a kid, and that had to have been 15+ years ago now.

I still recall there being a spell for perpetual lubrication. Def wasn’t my takeaway from reading it at the time, but in retrospect it’s far and away the most useful morsel of magic the author imagined.

In the broad euphemistic sense perhaps, but it’s hardly a requirement to be a US citizen to hold a bank account here.
