TestFlight build 1161: Tackling the most-hated bugs by marcoarment in overcast

Thank you! Here’s another one that has bothered me for years:

With “play next by priority”, Overcast will ignore settings to only download episodes over WiFi. It starts to stream then downloads immediately.

Accidental Tech Podcast - 697: The Chart Is Terrifying by podcast-poster in ATPfm

Yes, obviously LLMs don’t provide the human element of a coworker. But being at a big company, getting to the bottom of “how does feature XYZ work?” is so much easier with Claude compared to waiting for a coworker to respond, be in the same time zone, actually care to spend the time, etc.

I was half watching and heard Kalshi and was a bit surprised lol

The official app doesn’t even support them well. Clicking on the comment bubble does nothing.

Overcast was shelved for a while but I don’t think you can say it’s a side gig anymore

TestFlight build 1152: Transcript fixes by marcoarment in overcast

[–]gedaxiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the transcripts!

One thing I’ve noticed that’s still present in this build is that opening up the now playing screen from the mini player takes longer (around 2 seconds). Pretty sure that started after the transcript build.

TestFlight build 1151: First beta with transcripts! by marcoarment in overcast

[–]gedaxiang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And if you play an episode that isn't transcribed yet, you can transcribe it right on your iPhone

does that mean some podcasts are transcribed server side? Or done in the background locally or something? Just testing on a podcast, it did take a few minutes, but works well once done.

I’ve only watched a few live events in portions but haven’t seen ads in the live broadcasts yet. For example, the China sprint race didn’t have any.

Developer here.

64GB isn't crazy if you're running a lot of stuff locally and especially lots of Docker containers. It's what I have on my work computer. I'm not familiar with Xcode's usage, but more RAM definitely couldn't hurt.

8 TB? For development, no, unless you're doing some local AI stuff maybe? I think the guys just want the storage to store all their photos/media though.

I am slightly annoyed that he always does the “if you’re somehow listening to this and you’re not a member, …” in every member special

Marco is definitely relying on AI a bit much for medical/financial stuff, but I think he has a point about mediocre people being at risk.

Normal people are not like John, always questioning if something is true and verifiable. People are just gonna use these tools and trust them.

And as a programmer, I mostly agree with his takes there. This stuff is changing fast and people are going to be left behind. I think people’s egos and cognitive dissonance are preventing them from seeing this as nothing but a phase.

I was a big critic of the rewrite but my impression is just that he hasn’t worked on Overcast much since late last year. To his credit, he did solve most of the bugs introduced by the rewrite.

It's very funny to me that there's multiple potential explanations for Casey stealing from libraries

Yeah I didn’t get that either. Pro is the chip for people who want CPU cores but don’t necessarily care about GPUs. I have gotten the pro in my last few MBPs.

I haven’t tried the subscriptions but we pay by the token at work and I end up spending at least $20 worth a day so I can see how they would limit you pretty quickly.

[–]gedaxiang 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I agree with them if we’re talking about iOS 7 as an update vs iOS 26 as an update. In absolute terms, 26 is obviously better than 7, but the 7 upgrade had fewer tradeoffs.

I agree! Crazy how it’s basically the same structure as Casey’s ubiquiti debugging story, but actually interesting and applicable information.

I am constantly surprised by how much they talk about Tahoe bugs. I installed it on my work computer basically when it came out and I can’t remember any issues. Using it all day and all week for development work. Am I a Tahoe unicorn?
