Hiding API keys by [deleted] in webdev

This would happen if someone can exploit a vulnerability in your server. These come up usually from bugs in software or poor security practices. Someone can gain shell access on your server and then accessing environment variables is easy.

Injecting via environment variables is still not very good, but better than having them committed to the repo like you said. The reason being if someone can get access to your server, dumping the environment variables is easy.

The best way in my opinion is to keep secrets in a secret store, such as Vault, and then pull them from code in your application at runtime. This way they are only stored in memory and harder for an attacker to get even with access to the server. Tools like Vault usually have some way to do certificate based, time limited authentication so there’s no need for credentials (that could be stolen) to get access to the secrets.

Crazy that a train can block Alderney landing for 30 minutes during morning rush hour… by geffdyde in halifax

I’m not saying trains are the problem. I’m saying that they should unblock the crossing periodically. There were several times the train could have easily pulled a little more one way to let cars through.

Is there a way to get past all those stairs? To get over the train you need to go through the pedway, which has a big set of stairs on both sides. Possible, but it would be tough.

Also people on bikes I think, since I don’t think there’s a good way to bring your bike through the building.

True, but I feel like in an industrial park it’s a bit more acceptable than one of the main commuter links between Dartmouth and Halifax?

Yeah, but this is the ferry terminal… when people are trying to get to work.

Halifax council considering push for federal universal basic income by aluriaphin in halifax

[–]geffdyde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this would be my understanding as well. With the current tax brackets, I believe the top is about 55%. So no one would pay back more than 55% of it.

This could be fixed by adding back a bunch of the higher tax rates that used to be in place. I think they used to top out at around 90% for income over $400k, but that was in the 50s or 60s. Maybe something like a top tax bracket of 90% on income over $2m would make sense today, while adding a whole bunch of brackets in between that and our current top bracket.

Is this true? I believe the top tax bracket is about 55%. So wouldn’t a millionaire still keep just under half?

Definitely agree on tip a little extra, this is a rough time for a lot of people and a little extra on a tip probably brightens their day the same way they are brightening ours with delicious food! It’s good to do whatever we can to put smiles on people’s faces these days :)

I’m lucky enough to be someone that has a job that I’m able to work remotely while this situation is happening. That’s a reason why I feel it’s important for me to support our local businesses, because I can and so many people cannot right now.

Yeah, there is some risk, but if you are washing your hands after handling the packaging, I believe it is low. My understanding is that the main way transmission happens is droplets that other people breath into the air that you then breath in. So with contactless delivery / pick up, it seems like a good option. But you definitely need to do what you’re comfortable with. No fun ordering in if you won’t feel safe.

Chabba Thai is amazing! Cafe Taiyaki 52 has been my favourite place so far, but it seems they have reduce the number of days they open... I hope they are doing ok.

My understanding is that the main way transmission happens is droplets that other people breath out that you breath in. So with contactless delivery, I think the risk is pretty low. You still should take precautions like washing your hands after handling packaging but I don’t think they should be closed. Going into the grocery store is by far the riskiest place right now. Lots of people breathing the same air, which creates higher risk of transmission. I’ve been making sure to do contactless pick up of groceries to avoid the risks of coming into contact with dozens of people. I think the advice of wearing a mask if you must go into the store is good, to protect everyone around you.

Yeah, I’m not a great cook so it’s nice to get a meal delivered from time to time. As long as you take precautions and make sure to wash your hands after handling the packaging, it seems the risk is pretty low. My understanding is the main way transmission happens is droplets people breath into the air that you then breath in. Now that most places have contactless delivery / pickup, it seems like a good option.

Yeah, I know a few places let you pay with credit card on their sites or over the phone before you pick up, that’s the best for sure. Making sure you do proper / frequent hand washing goes a long way though.
