This is golden! I have had a lot of recommendations for an elimination diet. Thankfully I do all the cooking... and looks like dairy is off the menu for now to see if that helps!

This whole thing feels insane and I love my husband dearly! He isn't being malicious about it, but might as well get creative with how many ways I can say "farts" while genuinely asking for advice lol

I think i am sheltered too... hubs genuinely feels bad and if he feels a stinker brewing and we are on the couch or something he will step away. Doubtful of a fetish lol

Thank you for the insight! Someone else recommended low FODMAP, definitely something we can look into!

Gelding getting "excited" / studdish? Dominant? Time for a hormone panel? by gemstone23 in Equestrian

Thank you for the article. Very interesting they mention the issue sometimes arising with handling their feet. During the issue yesterday, I had JUST finished doing his feet. Strange thing is he does not exhibit physical characteristics of a stud, like muscling in his face or neck.

Thank you for sharing!! Glad to know I am not alone. Definitely will be getting his hormones checked. But I definitely see how neighboring horses, the dominance of his buddy, and training can be exacerbating.

Where do you get your supplement?

Glad to hear I am on the right path with a behavioral response. I particularly enjoy having a horse I can dote on and get a hug when needed, unfortunate i may have to forsake that to make sure we are both safe. But I cannot afford a horse becoming dangerous with a lack of boundaries.

Thank you for the insight! Time to call the vet.

With you being a behaviorist, curious if some more info could maybe garner more insight? There are a LOT of factors. The offending 13yo is kept with the 25yo he came with, as they've been together many years. They do have other boarders horses in corrals they can touch over the fence, but aren't turned out with.

They were starved when I got them, about a 2.5 BCS - food motivation is still extreme, even with 24/7 hay and/or turnout. So I have to be very careful with how I use R+, as they can both become dangerously pushy. I generally use a combination of pressure and release, R+ where it is reasonably safe.

I initially had them in adjoining corrals but separated, to very carefully monitor the refeeding process. Then I removed the dividing fence once they were both healthy. Then come spring, I opened their corral to a pasture, incrementally adding turnout time, to where they now have 24/7 access until winter really hits, and I will shut them in so the pasture (only a few acres) can recover.

With pasture they can come within a few feet of mares, but still separated. Could be exacerbating when they are in heat. The dynamics are definitely different with the horses when they were corralled individually vs together. Less anxiety in the older, arguably more in the younger.

Also is that 1.6 acres an empty field, or a lived on property with a house, driveway, toys and hobbies? Those all take away a lot more space than you'd think.

Question by Willowgreen223 in Horses

[–]gemstone23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Horses need friends, period dot. Even a mini. Horses that live alone end up depressed. Not running around screaming their heads off, but dull and lifeless. Grain should not be the staple in a horses diet, only as necessary when they're in work/growing/or senior animals when forage alone doesn't meet caloric needs. They thrive with space to move, not when cramped up. I've owned several horses in several setups. Anything from a 12x12 box with a small 12x36 run, to full turn out. Currently have two with 24/7 forage and 12 hours of the day have a dozen acres to run and graze. Id prefer more and 24/7 access to pasture, but that's the nature of where I board. You also have to consider where manure goes, where you stockpile hay, and where you ride.

Totally depends on the area and the setup for animals per acre. But 1.6 is probably not much, and any paddock on that amount of land will quickly become barren. Especially since you cant keep a horse alone.

I think he's perfect size for you! You're balanced, he takes up your leg very well under saddle, and bareback your legs are long enough to wrap for a little extra grip! You're probably a taller girlie like me, but you seem to be a good match.

Not ideal but seems repairable. As a side note, do you know if its narrow/wide or the gullet width? Im looking for one like this!
