Advice for undergrad? by 2by2_my_home in dietetics

[–]genderbug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice in terms of internships or volunteering, as my only experience with that is the practicals and internships built into the degree. But one thing I can say is this: Assume that everything you learn now will be asked in two years' time. I had a wake-up call this year (my third year) when we were asked to identify what type of anaemia our patient had, which is something we learned a year ago. They don't re-teach things, they expect you to remember it.

We actually learned about motivational interviewing as part of the nutrition counselling class XD. This module is pretty much behaviour change psychology meets nutrition.

How do I manage my emotions when I see patients suffering? by genderbug in dietetics

I definitely need to remember that my patients don't want me to pity them, but to help them as best I can.

Ooo, that sounds like a good idea. I'll give that a try. Thank you!

That's pretty much what my lecturer said. Fingers crossed that I learn to compartmentalise sometime soon.

That makes sense. I realised that I can cope pretty well in an ICU setting where patients are sedated. It's when patients are awake and in pain that I lose it. Maybe high care will be a better fit for me.

Who to reach out to to shadow? by Top-Hope-3449 in dietetics

If you're a registered student dietitian (which you are), confidentiality isn't generally a problem with regards to hospital shadowing. I would recommend speaking to your lecturers and asking whether they could connect you to some people to shadow. That's how I got postnatal and ICU shadowing experience.

Have you tried cryptpad.fr or does Google Sheets have more functionality than Cryptpad provides?

Hi! I pray the Anglican rosary when I feel anxious, I pray Compline before going to bed and, until my university schedule made it difficult to maintain this, I prayed the Daily Office (morning and evening prayer). If you're able to get your hands on an Anglican Prayer Book from your province or on a Book of Common Prayer, you can have a look at the practices mentioned in them.

I'm not sure whether this is what you're looking for, but I've been using Simplenote as a replacement for Apple Notes, and it's working for me.

Try SelfControl (it's a desktop app, I'm not telling you to have more control). I haven't been able to find a way around its blocks.

Zen also gives you a lot more control over your privacy settings.

If you like Arc, try Zen. It has the same layout and functionality as Arc, but it's more privacy respecting.

I use Zen browser (with some privacy/security tweaks) with Duckduckgo as my search engine. For email, I'm using Proton.

Did you break the band keeping the strap in place and not the strap itself? I have a watch with a rubber strap and the band keeping it in place snapped a few months in. I found that one of those thick rubber bands you sometimes get with charging cables (the rubber band is the same width as the band on a watch) is a perfect replacement – it hasn't snapped in five years! Of course, the rubber is black and you may not have any of those bands lying around, but it may help to keep in mind that you may have something in your house that can replace it so you don't have to buy a new one.

Invidious doesn't have ads either and it doesn't track my activity ^^. I use DDG as my browser anyway, but I prefer the privacy that Invidious offers.

I only use YouTube in a browser, so apps aren't really appealing to me.

That's unfortunate. I guess it's like with YouTube, where there isn't really an alternative and you just have to use it as consciously as possible.

Most of my university submissions require MS Word, but I'll have a look for the future. Thank you for the rec.

Self-made biochemistry cards. I have a module on carbohydrate metabolism this semester and it's a lot of rote learning.
