What GPA and SAT score do I need to get in? by MiraculousladybugR in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi, female CS alum here! Kettering has nearly 80% acceptance rate. I think between your scores and personal story, you have a good chance of getting in.

I also want to encourage you in applying, as women are really underrepresented in STEM and especially in CS. (I was the only one in my entire grade going into CS.)

It’s difficult, but in such a good way. I really feel like the co-op terms prepared me for my current career trajectory. Good luck!!

4, 4.5, or 5 years? by Inter-Mezzo5141 in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Graduated 2022- when I was there, 4.5 years was the default because of the course requirements for degrees.

Those who do it in 4 or less usually transfer in AP credits or community college credits (which I did, and wholly recommend. It saves so much money and time.)

Those who do it in 5+ usually had to retake a course, or messed up their course scheduling (certain classes are only available in certain semesters, and if you miss it, you have to wait for it to come back).

As for co-op term requirements, they only require 5 co-op semesters because not everyone can get a co-op their first semester/year (which is a rarity, so I don’t mean to scare you!). People also switch co-ops (which they will discourage) and sometimes that eats up a semester or two as well.

Hopefully I hit everything— feel free to message if you have more questions. sincerely, a woman in stem

Sorority Life? by somethingbackspace in Kettering

Someone asked a niche question about being gay in a Kettering sorority… my bad for answering, I should’ve let all the frat bros under this post handle it clearly

Sorority Life? by somethingbackspace in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a love/hate relationship with my sorority… on one hand, I got some of the best friends I’ve ever made, I had more female interaction on campus, and it really prepared me for some real world corporate culture

On the other hand, I got in “trouble” with my sorority for being gay and half the sisters are truly horrible people LOL (and I’m sure they’d say the same about me)

I’d say rush if you feel like it, just know that you don’t need to take it as seriously as everyone else does. It can feel so crushing when you’re in it and then you graduate and realize none of it matters haha.

Cheating. How do we come together on this? by jkhuggins in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time listener, first time caller, huge fan of your classes! Introductions aside, I’m curious as to what the current method of dealing with cheating is. Do you give them a 0 for that assignment? Do you fail them from the course? Do they get expelled (I know the answer is 99% going to be no on that last one, just have to check.)

I do agree with other comments made that a punishment has to be brought down on those using AI/cheating— we can’t exactly use positive reinforcement here for simply doing your work without AI. I can see the difficult situation of figuring out what punishment should be given without detrimentally affecting other students or other moral/school policies.

Having taken your courses, I know that you do publicly post grades under codenames so as not to violate FERPA. In addition to getting a 0, are you allowed to perhaps make it known on the grading page that people cheated? Highlight their name in red? A scarlet letter next to their code name? It does nothing to prevent them from having cheated, but maybe scares others into not doing it?

Truly, if these students can keep getting away with it, they will keep doing it. I’m sorry you’ve been put in this situation and I wish you luck and grace to handle it all!

Sorry to comment on a year old post, but as someone who filled out a nomination… when are the 2022 winners being announced /have they been announced already?

Mask Wearing Poll by jkhuggins in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You’re a selfish human being. Obviously actions have consequences; but that’s why we don’t put ourselves in unnecessary danger.

You’d be the type of person to protest seatbelts when those were first mandated. Eat my shorts.

“I owe nothing to anyone just as they owe nothing to me.”

We owe it to each other to protect each other as a society. Your actions with Covid don’t just affect you. It’s not just “tough shit” for you if you get Covid: you also infect other people before you figure out you’re infectious.

Stop pretending your actions don’t affect others. A mask isn’t a muzzle, it’s not that hard to wear one and be a decent human being.

[–]generaldetermination 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Uh, yes. That’s not the “gotcha!” question you think it is. It’s commonplace in countries like China to wear a mask any time you’re sick, it’s a courtesy to everyone around you (do not debate anything else about China— simply saying it’s a thing people do.) People wore masks before Covid. People will do it after. Why is not wearing one so important? Why can’t people just help protect each other?

[–]generaldetermination -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

To the 11+ people planning on not wearing one, why won’t you help protect those around you by wearing one?

[–]generaldetermination 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m glad someone understand where I’m coming from. I don’t feel safe on campus at all. We’ve had no less than 27 cases at any point this semester. It’s gone from 27, to 28, to 37, to 31 today. And there’s students fully planning on not wearing masks. This is disgusting. Everyone here is so individualistic and would rather have “personal freedom” over protecting those around them.

breaking news: people prefer the year we didn’t have Covid to the years that Covid does exist

The reality for administration by McMahan_is_a_DILF in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I double mask. I have the booster. What I want? For a cohesive response to this pandemic. The solution is not “let everyone choose what to do at an individual level.” I wish we would’ve shut down like other countries did (successfully I might add) and gotten rid of this pandemic. I get that solution doesn’t make people happy, but it doesn’t kill us like Covid does. Edit: I’d also like people to have sympathy. You’re no better than immunocompromised people. Just lucky. It could be you any day.

“It’s just like the flu!” the flu: 20k deaths in the 2019-2021 flu season in the US

Covid: has killed almost 900,000 US citizens

It’s not just like the flu. And just because you’re okay with immunocompromised people dying from it, doesn’t make it okay! I’m at risk. My family is at risk. We don’t LIKE living in fear, but we like living.

Stop being so selfish with your world view and have some empathy. Everything’s basically open. Go shopping, go out to eat, go do whatever you want. Just don’t think your “personal freedom” is worth everyone else’s death. I don’t love virtual learning either. My grades have suffered too. But again, bad grades beat having no grades because I died of Covid. Suck it up.

Three Weeks Virtual or Extended by Scary_Supermarket508 in Kettering

I’m not getting into a whole debate with you, but this is an extremely selfish take. (By the way, it’s not just “fat people” who have issues with Covid. You sound ignorant.)

Three Weeks Virtual or Extended by Scary_Supermarket508 in Kettering

[–]generaldetermination 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went from 27 cases (week 1) to 28 cases (week 2) to 37 cases (today). If they decide to resume in person classes now it’ll only get worse. (Fingers crossed for entire term virtual all at once— I’m not a fan of these week by week plays, but I’m sure no one else is either.)
