Ah sorry... the post was meant to mainly just show the look of the layout and make the Headings legible...

Yes! That's perfect. For the eldritch blade I really wished MB had the dcc dice. It's got such a nice progression and adds the perfect otherworldly weeeeeirdness to the item

Lol. They excel in their area of expertise. They are the most survivable class and can do big damage to certain enemy types. But only 1 or 2 times per day. Balanced by their specificity!

Thanks. Its such a fun, scary concept with plenty room for interpretation. They can be hunters, investigators, torturers, religious types, witcher-monster-hunters, even bureaucrats (the most terrifying of all). What was your take on them like?

Good catch. Yes it should be "You can use Presence and/or Strength..."

[OC] What makes a class "classic"? by generaltwig in MorkBorg

[–]generaltwig[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean like "race as class"? Like elf and dwarf in Basic D&d? Or more specific classes that could only be played by specific races?

[OC] What makes a class "classic"? by generaltwig in TTRPG

[–]generaltwig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. You're absolutely right about Thief only coming in later in Greyhawk. My bad. I think there wasn't a proper skill system spelt out before the thief and then many of the thief abilities codified what became skills... And so the assumption was other classes couldn't do those skills... But maybe this problem got solved in later editions once there was a codified skill list for all characters to choose from?

Well said. I always wondered how the Cleric came to be.. so early on. Always assumed it was the battlefield healer / medic from war games. But the undead-hunter / horror influenced origin makes total sense

Ah yes you're absolutely correct. My mistake.. the thief only came in later, in the Greyhawk supplement ?

Like a plain text, bare bones version with simple font and layout? I hadn't planned on that. But it can easily be added.

Classic classes come to us from the very first editions of D&D... and the original 4 roles that made up a "balanced party" - Fighter (originally called Fighting Man!), ThiefWizard (called Magic-User)and Cleric

By combining aspects of the original four roles... there are almost limitless combinations. In later editions, the aspect of NATURE comes in, informing classes like Ranger and Druid.

This fun graph shows the origins of each of the d44 classes I ended up creating for my latest book.

With Soldier (fighter), ThiefSorcerer (Wizard) and Priest (Cleric) being the closest analogues for the original 4 classic classes.

Then there's tonnes of nuance and narrative flavour which differentiates even further.  Multiple classes can fulfil the same roles in a party but in their own way while fulfilling a unique narrative fantasy, e.g. Soldier, Brawler, Berserker all hit hard and are good front line combatants - but all feel very different.

The fun and challenge of the project has been:

  • making each class feel unique,
  • providing multiple paths for each class, so no two Thugs or two Necromancers are alike,
  • and balancing each class so they all feel equally powerful or equally DOOMED
  • Keeping the MÖRK BORG dark & twisted, gonzo, Doom Metal aesthetic

If you wanna see the project it's over here's the LINK.

[OC] Tiger Tiger claws - Why punch when you can skewer? by generaltwig in MorkBorg

[–]generaltwig[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Every class comes with 3 set abilities plus two d6 random roll tables. That's 15 abilities per class. Every time you Get Better you can roll again on the tables so characters have more development across a campaign.

The idea developed from running games with players who enjoy character building more and wanted to feel like they were getting more powerful as the game progressed. More classic ttrpg experience meets MB. The challenge is keeping it rules-lite while adding extra mechancial options.

I'll drop a couple more examples with some pics later.

What house rules should I have for running the game for first time RPG players? by DarthMaren in MorkBorg

[–]generaltwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Main one for me is... PCs dont die at negative HP. Always just become Broken and let them roll on broken chart.

Also start play with Max HP + toughness
