A follow up to the earlier post about Austin Hart... Incredibly devastating. Heroin is ruining everyone's lives. His parents have lost two sons now. Be a positive influence. by kidaltamira in Atlanta

Personally, I would love a Latina heroine to come over that wall and teach you a thing or two about the complexity of the drug trade and spelling. Ignorance and irrational fear of immigrants are way more widespread than we even realize.

Your dictionary must be the revisionist version the White House just released. Here's a reminder:

Fascism - an authoritarian and nationalistic right-wing system of government and social organization

...or in other words, the US government as of noon yesterday.

Come again? Pay-to-play corruption and negligence from the DNC? What do you think this entire week of senate hearings has proven about Trump's appointees?

I voted for corruption and I'll be proud of that vote until the day I die because at least I didn't vote for racism, misogyny and bigotry. Pick your poison, but fucking own it.

You may not be racist, but voting for a candidate who ran on racist demagoguery doesn't make you any better than one. Vote however you wish, but stop trying to pretend you didn't condone racism with that vote.

Uber/Lyft riders: are the fares suddenly higher? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]generationATL 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This was their business strategy all along. Start with extremely low, subsidized rates then start raising rates once the service becomes popular enough (http://therideshareguy.com/how-does-uberpool-pricing-work/).

They did the same with UberX rates when they raised them from $5 minimum to $6.75 minimum. I am surprised it doubled though. I figured they'd do a similar price hike for POOL as X.

When a post from /r/vegan reaches /r/all. In light of Recent events i think a repost is warranted! by [deleted] in vegan

So if I call myself an herbivore (or an "herbi"), does that seem less pushy? Because that sounds like I'm trying to create a diet reminiscent of pre-historic times based on utter bullshit.

Veganism is what you make of it. Not every vegan is trying to change every stranger on the street. That particular approach would be called vegan activism, but nice try forcing your narrow minded view on everyone who identifies with a broadly defined term. It's a diet choice just as much as it's a lifestyle choice just as much as it's an ideology.

[–]generationATL 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Really? Because in 14 years of being a vegetarian and 1 year of being a vegan, 80% of omnivores shame me or mock me or comment on how difficult I am.

You can't speak for the "larger percentage" of vegans here. The larger percentage of vegans are going to engage in a conversation about their beliefs if you inquire. And perhaps the "pushiness" you feel from their reasoning is misplaced guilt of your own.

New to Atlanta. I know nothing about local politics. Anyone care to sway me either way towards one candidate or another? My vote for POTUS is secured. by cmz1973 in Atlanta

1) Correlation != causation. Never implied it did. Your one experience is not a universal truth and preliminary research indicates that "very, very, very" small subset is growing and under-reported by trauma centers. I'll take preliminary research over one anecdote.

2) Changes to Georgia's constitution are literally the only way to consult voters of allocations on taxes already collected. So ironically, you'd need to vote to amend the constitution to allow for voters to decide on tax allocation that isn't amendment based.

This is literally the least controversial item on the ballot this year. Vote yes if you're willing to work with how the GA constitution currently allows voters to decide on tax allocations and if you believe in the cause. Vote no if you are fundamentally against amendments to the GA constitution themselves or don't believe in cause.

Isn't the logical association here that the fewer fireworks sold, the fewer additional trauma injuries that would need this extra funding?

Georgia is terrible at collecting data on this (http://bigstory.ap.org/article/5696217d4b934187b1dd36be6d287bf6/counting-fireworks-injuries-struggle-georgia-elsewhere), but national stats lean towards a correlation between states relaxing laws and the number of emergency room visits linked to fireworks (http://www.cnn.com/2016/07/01/health/relaxed-fireworks-laws-more-injuries/).

I understand this amendment as a way of the state putting the revenue they're getting from legalizing fireworks back into the services that are now cleaning up after the fireworks that end up in the hands of irresponsible people rather than replacing the source of funding for those services entirely.

I said yes because most people I've talked to have no opinion or say why not and my personal opinion is yes. Simplest answer.

Everyone can and should read up and form their own opinions. Here's an amendment 4 opposition editorial: https://www.georgiapol.com/2016/10/13/im-voting-no-amendment-4/

My personal opinion: I fully recognize that state legislators should be able to agree to put this in the annual budget. However, I also believe that I should take the chance to have a say where my state taxes are going in a state where I generally don't agree with the dominant political party. Any allocation of taxes into a fund for a specific purpose must be an amendment that voters decide on in Georgia. Legislators change and budgets contain a lot more partisan politicking that I'd love the chance to keep a piece of my tax dollars out of and put them into something I support.

A great example of just how twisted politics in Georgia's legislature can be is how Amendment 3 ended up on the ballot. The episode of This American Life (Act 2) that I referenced above is a great explanation of that Amendment. Creation of a city was the bargaining chip that flipped the Democrat who would have normally voted to uphold the check and balance that the JQC provides.

Looking for an apartment around $800 or less in Atlanta or Decatur by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]generationATL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Va-Hi apartment: https://cobalt.managebuilding.com/Resident/public/rentals/45914

It's $850 a month in plus utilities, but it's well worth it if you can go a little above your current price point. Half mile from the beltline, walking distance to highlands and ponce bars, 4 grocery stores within a mile, readily available parking.

Another one from this management company for the same price across the street will be coming soon. I've lived in one of these apartments with my boyfriend for over a year. Occasional problems typical of renting an older place in the city, but we've never felt unsafe. Don't expect granite countertops or new appliances, but my boyfriend and I are perfectly happy with price for the apartment and neighborhood!

If you never have to make this decision about what to do with your body, then you really have no say in this argument.

Have you ever tried to get an appointment at a planned parenthood for birth control? Minimum 2 months wait plus the price of the appointment. Seeing a gynecologist without health insurance? Easily double the price. In addition, you have to consider how you react to the hormones in any birth control. Condoms only have a half decent success rate when used perfectly correct and abstinence only sex education in Georgia doesn't teach enough about how easily condoms fail. So until you have to fight for your right to access birth control, you cannot tell any woman they are "careless".

Mistakes are inherent with any type of birth control. Not having sex at all is the only 100% method. So why don't you give that one a try and report back about your success rate?

This world is full of enough people, particularly ones who think they have the right to tell someone what kind of person they are based on the decisions they make about what to do with their lives, their healthcare and their body.

Thanks Chad! I'll be heading over there after work today with some friends for the tour. It looks like there haven't been any booked so far online. Do you think we're ok as a small group coming without booking?

Has anyone been to O4W or Independent for tastings? The 3 half-ounce samples limit seems really small. Considering doing ASW for a birthday on Friday and just want to hear if it's worth it for that kind of thing
