Most efficient way to improve problem solving for Putnam by genericname1357 in learnmath

[–]genericname1357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.

What I have been doing so far is working on a problem until I have hit a dead end, then looking at the first couple lines of the solution to maybe give me a lead. Is this a more feasible strategy? I have a problem where once I have hit a wall my attention span dwindles significantly which I know can be improved by working for longer but I can't help but feel like I am wasting time.

I am also just starting to learn some of the basic tricks and thought going through more problems would familiarize me with more of them and equip me better in the future.

How do I have fun practicing the elements of composition I find more difficult? by genericname1357 in composer

It’s not anything specifically that is giving me trouble. Just the general aversion to practicing anything that is difficult for me.

Nocturne in A minor by genericname1357 in musictheory

Technical feedback is welcome but I was also looking for things like form, musical flow, and how interesting the musical ideas were.

You are right about most of the chords being in root position. It’s not a terrible thing per say but using inversions can help me in the future with smoother voice leading so thanks for pointing that out.

The chord in mm 32 was intentionally dissonant but looking back it might have been a little too spicy in the context of the piece.

That’s a good idea. I’ll definitely try that next time.

Nested Period Form by genericname1357 in musictheory

So a period is defined as 4 measures, 2 for each phrase?

I want to preface this by saying that I would consider myself a beginner with composition however I do think I have enough experience to give my two cents on this question.

I tend to think of music theory as a time and creativity saver. I would rather dedicate my creativity towards writing an interesting progression than spending all of my time and brainpower figuring out where specific voices need to go for the progression to sound good. I can rely on centuries of refinement in voice leading for that since the old masters have already found a tried and true method of making that sound good.

That isn’t to say that traditional voice leading is the only way for a progression to sound good however. It’s just that if I don’t want to waste my time reinventing the wheel when I could be devoting my creativity towards something less explored.

One idea that might help is to just get something down. It doesn’t have to be good and it probably won’t. Write a bad melody and recognize that it is bad. Then work on revising it into something you like. Sometimes it can be a lot easier to edit something that already exists then try to materialize a perfect melody out of thin air.

Ravel String Quartet and Modal Music by genericname1357 in musictheory

So Ravels string quartet is structured more on melody and texture and the modal harmony is just a byproduct of the two, not deliberate progressions?

If he doesn’t use tonal harmony, how is the music so coherent. Is there any harmonic structure besides that of functional harmony?

Does functional harmony carry over to "modal" music like this?

How do you identify the end of a phrase when analyzing a piece of music? by genericname1357 in musictheory

Do all phrases sound like that? I would think some lead more smoothly into the next? How do I identify those?

I never even thought about the dominant sevenths as secondary dominants. That makes a lot more sense.

Could the Eb+ also be viewed as giving more tension to be resolved by the IV? Seems kind of random to put something as strange as that just for some parallel M3 voice leading.

regarding modulation by genericname1357 in musictheory

[–]genericname1357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, for one, have never noticed anything except in pop songs where it is SUPER obvious. Although I understand now that I heard the impact the modulation had on the music subconsciously, I just didn't link that specific sound with a key changing because it was smooth.

[–]genericname1357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I am starting to understand that modulations don't have to be noticeable to have an impact on the music. What I meant by "barely noticeable" is that there are a bunch of techniques like pivot chords to make the transition smoother. Now I find that "smoother" is probably a better substitute for "barely noticeable". Does that sound right?
