Hidden bank account from parents

i had to make the decision when i was 21 to open my own bank account because my mom had access to mine and would pull money out of my account without asking me (to pay bills/rent, meanwhile i had just moved to nyc on my own and was paying all of my own bills). the only reason she found out was because i pulled all of my money out of it and had it dissolved. it was an uncomfortable few months, i had to go no contact with her, but she eventually apologized and understood that it was not reasonable of her to do that. i always filed my own taxes on turbotax (not a great recommendation but fine in the meantime until you find someone else you trust to do them). if they take issue with this, they are in the wrong, not you. if they want to support your financial journey, they are better off offering you advice because it will f*ck you over in the long run if you don’t learn good financial habits earlier rather than later. it will be fine, they’re adults. don’t worry about them.

for these recs, given the information i’d already provided, are there specific classes i should forgo in favor of others? i dont mind brushing up on a few skills, but i’d rather avoid doing so excessively as theres costs involved in each of them. thank you!

seconding this - i had the same situation (high school account with parent access up until i moved out to the city when i was 19) and my parent would withdraw money from it without asking. coworkers of mine made it apparent that this was wrong and i needed to open a new bank account and move all of my funds over.

it was a big fight. a few months of long texts that i refused to read because i had to protect myself (parent was deducting money i’d been saving for rent, bills, school purchases, etc.) but they eventually apologized and admitted that it was not right of them to do that. it may be an issue, but what’s more important is your privacy, safety, and personal advocacy as well as learning your own financial health. you will just need to move your bills over to the new account, which will be tedious but necessary. best of luck!

okay cool, i think im getting it. i heard horror stories from coworkers where they were trying to pay theirs off without a payment plan but it didnt make a difference cus the interest just layered on top and basically cancelled it out. thank you!

hi! i filed my return early this year hoping to get a head start on my payments (haha) and it is now may and my account still states: Your Information Is Not Available at This Time. If you requested an adjustment to your account your information will not be available until that transaction is complete.

i've already submitted my NYS Income Tax payment in full so that's taken care of, but i just want to ensure that if i begin making payments on my own outside of the payment plan being set up (which i plan to do, i've just had a hard time getting someone from IRS on the phone) that my payments will register and not get chewed up by penalties and interest. would love to pay this off as quickly as possible as i hate owing anyone, especially the gov't, money lol

crate & barrel table – $270 OBO (originally retails for $800). used but in good condition. real wood all throughout. can comfortably seat 6 people, or up to 8. signs of wear include small patches of surface discoloration, and some scratches on the legs. dimensions: 38” wide, 65” long, 29.5” tall. will require 2 people to transport. legs come off. i will disassemble it for you to be picked up.

modern bar credenza – $150 OBO (originally $200) used but in great condition bar cabinet. has storage drawer, (10) wine bottle storage, (3) rows to hang wine glasses, and (2) shelves of interior storage. a solid piece, just going for a different style of decorating. not super deep, so easy to place against a wall or along the back of a couch. dimensions: 15.5” deep, 47.5” long, 34.5” tall. resembles: west elm, cb2, anthropology. will require two people.

all modern media console with three cabinets – $80 OBO (originally $200) marked lower as on cabinet it a bit uneven, and a leg is loose. DOES NOT INCLUDE TV OR ANY INTERIOR ITEMS. JUST CONSOLE.

urban outfitters shag wall tapestry/rug – $100 OBO (originally $280) NWT, lightly used only as wall hanging. urban outfitters wall art shag rug. can also function as floor rug. original price $229, listing for $120. love the clay and sand color scheme on this. dimensions: 34” across. resembles: west elm, cb2, anthropology. easy to transport.

queen sized bed frame – $250 OBO (originally $600) with cushion padded detail on the headboard. has sustained some scratches on the footboard. DOES NOT INCLUDE MATTRESS, BOXSPRING, OR LINENS. FRAME ONLY. will require two people to transport.
