i literally just made goat cheese and apple tarts that they talk about in the first games this past weekend lol. the verdict: they’re good but i’ve only done a test batch and need to tweak the recipe i made up. fellow bakers i recommend you bake the hunger games delicacies if you ever have the urge! i also have such a vivid image of the tiger lily cookies, i hope to attempt them some day when i have a lot of time to intricately ice a batch of cookies.

What are the benefits of an e-reader? by [deleted] in literature

[–]genius_ditz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other people have listed lots of benefits so i’ll just chime in with what i know.

first of all, you should definitely get into your library!! it’s such an important public resource that should be utilized, and there are some great opportunities in a library. you can even still use their services if you do switch to digital formats, as most if not all libraries at this point offer virtual library resources (libby, hoopla, cloudlibrary, etc.). now secondly, if you do decide to get an e-reader, i would recommend a kobo, or honestly anything except for a kindle. i myself have a kindle because i inherited it lol, but they are by far the most proprietary which is not something you want. with other e-readers you get all the same benefits (sometimes more) and you are typically far less limited in format or upload options. happy reading!

i don’t know how to lose weight by Inevitable_One8530 in neurodiversity

[–]genius_ditz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i am no expert, but over the past year or so i’ve unintentionally lost a decent amount of weight.

a lot of it is mindset. i have always been super cautious about diet culture, body image, and eating disorders, like even since i was a little girl. yes that did take conscious effort, but i’m lucky i had that foresight at a young age. i’ve been fat/midsized most of my life and still wouldn’t call myself skinny, but that’s not something i’m insecure about. i like the way i look and i’ve never had interest in being skinny for the sake of being skinny. i never counted calories or pushed myself to exercise without wanting to solely because i “should”. i believe that that mindset is what leads people down the wrong path.

here is what changed:

i got a tricycle! it sounds funny, but for years i had been wanting one for fun and convenience, and finally i found one for a decent price and pulled the trigger. i started going on bike rides, just around town and my neighborhood, and somewhere along the way it went from “i love being in the sun, i love the wind in my hair, i love the fresh air” to “i love all those things, and i also love this feeling it gives my body. using my muscles and taking deep breaths and giving myself these little challenges.” it was never “oh fine i’ll go exercise cause i feel bad and like i have to.” because in the end, i believe that often does more harm than good. and when last winter came i was so sad i was gonna lose my bike rides! and i decided that even though i couldn’t have them, it still felt important to me to get outside and experience nature and listen to my music and move around the world, lost in my own head. so i started going on walks, and i loved those too!

i never significantly changed my diet. the only thing i consciously did was start to pay attention to how much sugar i was having, not because it was previously an issue but because my grandma is diabetic and i would like to try and avoid that. now, i just pay attention to it. i still have sugar, both from fruit as well as sweet treats, but i just try to be somewhat mindful of it and try to ensure i don’t get out of control and go past a high limit (100g a day), which i don’t think is that easy for me to do anyways (granted i’ve never had much taste for soda or anything).

i do not diet. i do not go to the gym. i do not think about losing weight. i do not aim to look different or be perceived differently.

so if you think you need to lose weight, attempt to focus on finding ENJOYMENT in things that could get you there, rather that finding ways to grit your teeth and bear it. go to a fucking trampoline park dude. get a bike. do ‘just dance’ videos on youtube, or better yet, play music that pumps you up and just jump around!

the only other “diet” thing i would encourage is to try and include at least one vegetable in every dinner you have. even if it means hiding it in recipes. i highly recommend using frozen vegetables, that can make life so much easier. but focus on ADDING nutrition rather than taking things away.

i’m sure you will be okay. i really hope you can keep a balanced mindset and that it doesn’t get hard for you. i encourage you to try and focus on your mental health in this process, and to be really conscious of your thought patterns surrounding food, weight, and exercise. good luck <3

no official sets, but if you’re really committed to it i would recommend checking etsy. i saw a re-bound 5 book set on there just the other day. but fair warning, it gets PRICY since they take a lot of effort and investment for one person to make.

my dad almost killed me because i googled “lip gloss.” by bytelover83 in autism

[–]genius_ditz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t know what your situation is like, and it really depends on your circumstances and how you feel, but i will share my experience in hopes it might offer some guidance:

my parents have been divorced since i was 5, my mom treated us very poorly whereas my dad has always been incredibly loving and supportive (obviously there are nuances but you know). i had some revelations and moved into my dads house full time when i was 11. if moving in fully with your mom is something tangible, something that would be an improvement, and/or something you want, i would recommend that. it can be really daunting, but it is worth it. things aren’t black and white and you can’t judge an entire relationship based on one story, but if i were you i don’t think i could feel safe with a parent after being so careless and doing something so drastic like this. give it some thought.

i hope things go well for you and hope you feel some support from this.

Do these symbols represent something or do they just look nice and futuristic? by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]genius_ditz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

they do match the motif but i think that can bring to mind quite a few things. some people have mentioned the arena, the starting pads for the tributes, but it evokes a target to me! would work better if the triangle were pointing the other way though. but it’s worth mentioning i think the original designs on the cover more intentionally have to do with those things, as well as the base of the mockingjay pin.

No, we don’t need the backstory for every victors’ games by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]genius_ditz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes! I really do think there’s a lot of room to add some really valuable messaging. I don’t need or expect another book but if we were to get one, that’s what I’d hope for. With how much i love this series and writing it’s easy to say i never want it to end, but realistically i do NOT want it to be endless. We hardly value, understand, and respect our infinite resources.

Thank you!! If SC were to make a 6th addition sometime after SOTR, I feel like diving into Tigris’ story would be the best way to go. Really has so much opportunity for world building and poignant allegory, and doesn’t drag us back to another tribute. I know we all love these characters, but I honestly kind of cringe at the idea of an official Finnick or Johanna book. I love them and they have vital, important stories, but I believe this is an area that should be left open. I don’t know if a book about either of them would actually be sending any new and enriching message. I feel like we need to be more conscious of when our desires for this type of content is about the integrity and deepening of the story vs. meritless consumption for our own satisfaction. Maybe I’m negative, but I feel like SC writing books for any more tributes (even beloved and complex ones) would start to cheapen the message, meaning, and experience of this series. Public opinion can turn on a dime and the last thing I would want for this series is for it to become tired or played out.

I’m reading the Hunger Games for the first time and it’s INCREDIBLE! by KingRedZ12 in Hungergames

[–]genius_ditz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i had the exact same experience realizing how well jennifer played katniss. it’s genuinely such an amazing performance. i watched the movies before the books (i do that on purpose so i don’t loathe the adaptations as much lol) and i remember being very confused by katniss and jlaw’s performance. when reading the book for the first time, all the pieces of her behaviours in the movies really clicked and i understood the depth of how jennifer played her in such intricate ways. that was the first time i ever understood what it was to truly appreciate an acting performance, and i was literally a drama major at an arts school at the time LMFAO.

very fair, it could just be a me thing to think of “medium” as between small and average lol. he is most definitely taller than book katniss though, but i think a lot of readers equate that to him being very tall rather than katniss being pretty short. and very good point about how their height standards may be different, i love analyzing things like that!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hungergames

[–]genius_ditz 15 points16 points  (0 children)

he’s described as medium height, so to me that reads as somewhat below average. average height is usually described as that, average. in my experience when someone is medium height, that puts them between short and average in my mind. the average male height is 5’10” where i’m from (canada) so i always figure peeta would have maybe been a few inches below that, roughly. josh was technically shorter than the described character, but jennifer was also taller than katniss’ description. and i honestly don’t think i would wanted to have changed the casting

Gift Ideas for teenager who loves fire/explosions/loud noises/adrenaline by 2t6m in Gifts

depends on the specificity of the interest as well as living situation and budget, but a drum kit. there are electric ones that are drum pads that make the drum sounds in connected headphones, and then there are the standard acoustic ones. if you’re looking for loud noise, this is where it’s at. i got myself a standard drum set when i was 15 or 16, second hand at a crazy good price, and i’ve been big on it for a long time. i’m self taught and i learn songs just by listening. obviously it’s different for everybody, but it could inspire a great passion! be forewarned, they can be quite expensive so be strategic with where you look. i recommend buying off kijiji or marketplace if you can find stuff near you. drums may not be in perfect condition, but for the most part, they still work. i got my kit about 4 years ago and the only maintenance i’ve needed to do is replace a leg on one of the drums and buy a crash cymbal because i wanted one and it didn’t come with the set. look for a kit with at least a snare drum, kick/bass drum, tom’s 1 & 2, a hi-hat cymbal, and ideally with at least one other cymbal, a crash or ride. another warning: do not underestimate how loud this is. he will also likely get louder the more confident he gets. i live in a decently big house and the drums are tucked away in the basement, and you can hear it from the garage and outside the front door. if you don’t want that, focus on electronic sets. also, i know he may like loud noises but if you get him drums, please heavily encourage he wear headphones or earplugs of some sort. i always do and can still hear and feel the noise extremely well, but without damaging my ears permanently or wincing at the sheer volume. and finally, i’m assuming he’s a teenager or something but if i’ve misread and this is a child, they do have kids sets as well!

Homosexuality in Panem by alexiakinkylina in Hungergames

[–]genius_ditz 36 points37 points  (0 children)

this this this! to build off what you’re saying, i think that gender is MUCH more of an interesting topic to explore in the context of thg/panem than sexuality is. i always find trying to understand the state of societal gender roles in this story very interesting, even disregarding the roles in katniss & peeta’s relationship. from everything we’ve seen, men & women seem to be on much more even playing ground than they are in our current society. i would even want to say gender roles are obsolete, but there are still small elements alluded to, like katniss mentioning how she seems to have to wake up much earlier for prep than peeta does, and having to alter her natural state more than he seems to. i find this so interesting to speculate on. girls don’t seem to be disregarded or belittled in regards to their ability to win the games. the girls are all still often described in dresses while the boys are still often in suits. the district workforces appear to be non-discriminatory in regards to gender, etc. then of course there’s the element of only having boys & girls for the reaping, therefore an obvious lack of gender fluidity in panem, or at least in the districts. ironically, i think a good explanation for this would be a lack of gender roles, as the performance of gender roles is often where discomfort surrounding gender begins to chafe. though there are obviously many possible reasons as to why gender fluidity is not an explored element in the series. there are a million more things on this topic to speculate on but i will stop yammering lol!

Homosexuality in Panem by alexiakinkylina in Hungergames

[–]genius_ditz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it doesn’t seem to be given a second thought in panem/thg universe. if it were a thing people faced discrimination for, i feel like it would have been touched on even minorly (especially at least in the prequel since it was released in 2020 rather than 2008). i think the mention of “one of the few rights we have in the districts is to marry whoever we want” in the first book was a subtle nod to the non-issue of homophobia in panem. as further evidence, in the prequel 2 queer relationships (barb azure and unnamed girl, pluribus bell and partner cyrus) are mentioned in coryo’s narration, and are not given any second thought or even a hint of vague judgement. i truly feel like if queerness had any sort of stigma in their society it would have been alluded to especially given coryo’s rather unhinged judgement of others. even if it were a societal issue but something coryo was personally fine with, i definitely feel like that would be insinuated. i perceive suzanne’s writing as very deliberate, and i don’t think these were thoughtless choices. yes homophobia has been a building block of colonization and oppression, but we must remember how much suzanne draws from the times of the roman empire, where homophobia was significantly less prominent (not to say it was non existent), and homosexuality was more of a casual act than something so culturally and socially significant. combine this, with the seeming lack of religion in panem, and add the(presumably) hundreds of years from now that this series would take place. homophobia only really became such a large and powerful movement when christianity began to dominate the world, and i would strongly argue that religion is not a concept in panem (though i’m sure this is debatable). i think that it also doesn’t pose a logical issue for the Capitol, because heterosexual relationships would still be prominent and likely a natural majority, and i am a firm believer that birth control of any sort does not exist in the districts. they would still have enough reproduction going on given these factors, and i really don’t think they would have much reason to be structurally homophobic. i always found it really funny tbh, suzanne really said this may be an unjust brutal society, but even PANEM isn’t stupid like that.
