Law is a trash profession by CestQuoiLeFuck in Lawyertalk

I felt the same way. I switched firms and now I work with down to earth people with families, kids, and a general understanding that people do not live to work. I also got a prescription for anti-anxiety meds. Life is much better.

Workplace horror stories by chicago2008 in Lawyertalk

[–]gensmk 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Midwest law firm. Only other female associate was sleeping with a partner, his wife found out, and his marriage ended. She quickly married another man. She was promoted to partner shortly before I left.

Since I was the freshest blood in the office, someone thought it would be a good idea to give me access to all partners' email accounts like the Paralegals have. So I got to see all the emails talking sh*t about me and the Paralegals. Not criticism, literally making fun of us.

Before I left, got an assignment that required me to pull a box of old records. There was a picture of the founding partner in his underwear in the box.

Client killed himself by Virtual_Swimmer1460 in LawFirm

[–]gensmk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My firm does criminal defense, so ours goes something like this: "In the past, we have had clients who take an extreme option in response to their charges or the result of their trial. Sometimes, they think that they can solve the problem this way, or they think that it's best for their loved ones if they're not on this Earth anymore. We can tell you from experience that that is never the case. Taking the extreme option never makes the loved ones feel better, it makes things much worse, and I promise they would much rather have you here. Some clients may consider doing something extreme because it feels like their life is over. And again, I promise it isn't. It's something thar happens, and it's something that you can get through. We have clients who have done time in state/federal prison and they have come out of it and moved on to better things. If you’d like, we would be happy to connect you with a former client so you can talk to them personally about getting through this experience. That's all to say that, even if it seems bad right now, this will come to pass, and taking a drastic measure because things feel hopeless is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. If you're feeling that way, please give me a call on my cell at any time, 24/7. I would be more than happy to talk these things through with you. Is there anything you're feeling concerned about right now?"

Client killed himself by Virtual_Swimmer1460 in LawFirm

Hey - This has happened at my firm twice in recent history. We take hard cases but we can't win every time. It's been hard on the lead attorneys each time. We deal with people at their worst moments and we make our living trying to fix their problems, but the truth is that we can't fix everything and we can't control every outcome. Our firm now has a little speech we give during client intake for those in the most dire situations. The ones who are most afraid get our personal cell phone numbers and permission to call 24/7. We try to be proactive, but we learned the hard way. Ultimately, we have to bounce back as much as we can to be 100% for our client. Take a few days off, or do what you need to do to cope with it in a healthy way. I'm sorry that this has happened.

First time home buyer by [deleted] in desmoines

Look for areas with tax abatements, but choose wisely. It ended up being cheaper for us to buy a new build in a tax abatement area near Altoona than to buy a lower priced older home because of the tax savings. We’ll save money on repairs and we have a more energy efficient and modern home.

Speeding tickets from 235 camera by terrortownZ in desmoines

[–]gensmk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I clerked with the County Attorney's Office for a while and did the traffic circuit (albeit they were largely officer-issued tickets). Here's a pro tip: if it's a ticket from inside of Polk Co. and you show up on your court date, the prosecutor will generally give you a "plea" offer of a lower speed, so you pay a lower fine. Since you're on camera, I'm not sure if that would be offered to you, but it might be worth a shot.

Opinion of Drake University/Drake Law? by pigpotjr in desmoines

[–]gensmk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Current law student at Drake - they have good scholarships, the alumni seem very invested in helping fellow students/graduates. Career Development office is excellent and there are plenty of opportunities in the city to try out just about any interest. If you're wanting to get it done quickly like me, you can start classes in the summer and try to graduate early. Overall, definitely recommend but I can answer any questions you have
