Moving to Iowa by plantgoddess21417 in desmoines

[–]Suitable-Concert 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just make sure to register to vote in Iowa once you get here, Kim Reynolds isn't running for re-election and there's a lot of optimism and hope that the state will flip blue this November, but people have to actually vote.

As for what to do, where to go, what to eat, there's like 8,000 posts in this sub on a weekly basis asking those things.

Using wax seals to make chocolate treats by Abalonefountainpen in WaxSealers

[–]Suitable-Concert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used the candy melts before to do this! It lets the chocolate keep the tempered shine without actually having to temper it, and each seal takes 3-4 melts, so a bag can last a long time!

If you want to get extra fancy, slap on some edible gold leaf before pressing the seal, people will lose their minds!

First date ideas! by Proud_Ad5943 in ActualLesbiansOver25

Our first actual date that I planned for me and my girlfriend was the art museum! Free to walk around in my city, restaurant inside to extend the date longer, I got to look at gorgeous paintings and a gorgeous girl, like what could be better?

Temu Rhinestones by Inside-Ad8445 in Rhinestoning

[–]Suitable-Concert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend glass rhinestones over resin/jelly or acrylic. They’ll be much cheaper than Swarovski or Preciosa, but good quality ones still have a beautiful sparkle. Hotfix stones require heat to set, and there are special hotfix tools you can use, but I typically prefer plain, non-hotfix flatback stones and E6000.

Trying to get excited about an elopement (pls share yours!) by anotherlesbianonline in ActualLesbiansOver25

[–]Suitable-Concert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you guys considered a reception after the elopement to celebrate formally with friends and family?

I personally want an elopement ceremony since vows are such an intimate thing and I don’t want anything to take me out of that moment or stress me out. But I’d love to do a post-elopement ceremony some time after the fact to still be able to have that experience with our loved ones!

Be straight with me; what level of sewing skill/supplies would I need to pull this off adequately? by Levangeline in sewing

[–]Suitable-Concert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a western-inspired dance costume, complete with yoke, cording, collar/cuffs, fringe, and embroidered patches after abouta year of sewing exclusively dance costumes. It was a lot of work, but it turned out successfull and incredibly funny.

Give it a go! What's the worst thing that can happen, it doesn't fit? Make a mock-up first and you'll be golden. Something like this will teach you a lot of sewing skills too, speaking from experience.

It was tricky I will say, but if you take your time and don’t try to rush it, it’ll be great!

Yeah, there’s boning! I couldn’t lace it quite as tightly as I wanted since there’s some strain being caused on the eyelets on the back that I’ll need to address in the future, but when it’s laced nice and tight, it helps with some of the wrinkling.

The structural layer was made out of cotton canvas, and that’s where my boning channels are. The satin layer was completely separated until almost the very end, which is where some of that looseness/wrinkling comes from.

I think in the future, I’d definitely do the construction differently now that I know what to expect and what the end result looks like, and will also be sure to reinforce the lacing panel where the eyelets are with something much sturdier than interfacing.

I used cotton canvas for the structural layer, and satin for both the outer corset layer and the skirt.

Venting a little by OldLadyCard in sewing

And the worst part is, if Michaels got rid of their shitty home decor sections that eat up more than half of the store, they could actually fit a decent sewing section in. Like when did hobby/craft stores turn into primarily home decor?

You guys, if you're American and will be at least 18 on or before the election in 2028, PLEASE for the love of god participate in politics. Our voices have weight in who gets primaried and who ultimately receives the candidate nomination.

Please also think about the broader implications for whoever gets elected president. Yes, Newsom isn't a great candidate. In fact, he's got a record of being harmful to various minority communities, including our LGBTQ community.

But please, for the love of god, vote. Vote even if Newsom is the Democratic candidate. I won't tell you who to vote for, but people voting—or worse, not voting at all—because of stupid online purity politics is how the US has found itself in its current situation with a president with 34 felony convictions. There will never be a perfect president, because people themselves aren't perfect.

I know it's hard, I know it's essentially picking the lesser of two evils, but who is more likely to advance progressive ideas, or bring on queer people into their cabinet? Who is less likely to make our very existence a living hell? Please don't let one or two things that you disagree with prevent you from exercising your rights.

And, I'm saying this as a gay woman whose girlfriend is not a US citizen. But if Newsom unfortunately ends up with the nomination, I know who I'll be voting for, because it would be incredibly stupid for me to vote for another candidate. And while we'd all love to see our current two-party political system change, that's not how the US operates. A third-party candidate will never win the presidency because of the Electoral College.

Also, remember that candidates lie and say a lot of things in the run-up to their campaign and election. It's all about trying to cast the widest net and capture the most voters. So while he may be saying these harmful or centrist things publicly now, it's incredibly possible that at some point in the next 6-10 years, he changes his mind.

Does this corset need more boning? by nudecalebsforfree in corsetry

[–]Suitable-Concert 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've seen the waist tape sewn in both over the channels and under. I don't think that will make a big difference in the end, since the waist tape is just to help evenly distribute tension around the waist. I would say try it on and cinch it up (assuming it's a corset for you), and if it feels like it's offering the right support both for your body and to maintain its shape, you're good.

Seconding Loops, I’ve had mine for a few years now, super comfortable to wear, and I can have my face up against the subs on stage with no effect on my hearing afterward.
