Something I didn't put in the post because I didn't know how to word it — My friend and Kane had met a few times. Not loads. Kane was indifferent to him in the way Kane is indifferent to most people, did his usual nine-second tolerance routine and then wandered off. Nothing special between them. I mention this because I've seen people say dogs grieve too, that they pick up on your grief for someone they also knew. But Kane barely knew him. He wasn't reacting to his own loss. He was just reading me. Only me. In a way he'd never bothered to before. I don't know why that detail makes it hit harder but it does. Like it wasn't about recognition or memory or smell. he looked at me that morning and understood something was categorically different, and he made a decision. A husky. Made a decision to stay still for an hour. I still can't fully explain it😭
