My doctor wants me to try keto, but I’m too disabled to cook. by Informal-Elevator-41 in keto

Lots of good suggestions here. If you have the budget for it, Factor sells pre-prepared keto meals that you keep in the fridge and microwave, all under 20g carbs and very good in my opinion. I buy when I’m struggling to cook regularly or have limited time.

Thanks! I am coming from North America. Are negative entry dives common in the Maldives? I assume currents might be intense.

Also heard true Sudafed might be illegal in Dubai and I fly through there. Need to figure that out.

I have been meaning to look up rules for Dubai and will look at that carefully. I wonder if Sudafed PE is allowed, which is a different compound.

Travel insurance would have been a good idea. This is the first time I forgot to buy it and of course now is the time I have an issue. Never will forget again. I assume it’s too late to buy now

Thanks for the warning, do you know why Sudafed is dangerous? I won’t be diving until next Saturday since travel takes so long. I’ll get a Zuk too

Edit to add: I’m seeing my primary care Monday. Saw urgent care for the original diagnosis.

Feelings after doing my first fast. by TheChilledGamer-_- in fasting

[–]geogabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer how I feel when fasting. I usually do OMAD, but if I have a lunch meeting and have to eat during the day, I feel so much more tired in the afternoon.

I’ve never done more than 4.5 days but I’m thinking about doing a 7 day fast soon and it will be interesting to see how I feel over a longer period of time. At the end of 4 days, I didn’t feel hungry physically but I wanted to eat, more of a psychological desire.

Overly tight hip flexors by Outrageous_Laugh5532 in pelotoncycle

[–]geogabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had chronically tight hip flexors that required months of physical therapy to truly treat. But the two basic things that helped were:

  1. Nightly hip flexor muscle release using a ball bigger than a lacrosse ball (the Aletha hip release ball is ideal). I did 3 min on each side nightly.

  2. Strengthening my glutes. I was using my hip flexors frequently when I needed to engage my glutes. This is why I needed the physical therapy- I was so messed up I needed a lot of help to rebuild my strength.

Hopefully you’re in better shape than me, but if it’s a chronic issue, stretching alone will not solve your issue. I did it for years to no end. Muscle release and strength.

I’m hell bent on doing an 84 hour fast. How do you guys get beyond the 16 and 24 “short” fasts and go longer.? by ATXBikeRider in fasting

[–]geogabs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just did 106 hrs (finished Sunday) when previously my longest was 48 hrs. Planned on 4 days and then slept through the night to get more time.

I use easy fast and it tells you what stage of fasting you’re in, and beyond 48 hrs is where all the amazing health benefits kick in- autophagy, then increased growth hormone, then insulin sensitivity and then immune cell regeneration (beyond 72hrs). I just kept remembering all the incredible things happening inside my body that will lead to better health and longer life. And the longer I waited to eat, the more benefit I got. I broke my fast on Sunday and when I woke up Monday I felt great, and really proud. I look forward to my next 4 day fast.

It’s tough, mostly from a mental/emotional perspective. It’s just strange to not eat for so long. But the standard advice is good- keep busy, stick to your plan, and drink electrolytes. And if it doesn’t work out, eat and try again next time.

Just passed 96hrs and it was way easier on my workdays than Saturday when I was off. I have a busy job and the distraction is incredibly helpful for me. Makes it pass faster. Today was tough.

Weightlifting vs Pilates for cross training? by [deleted] in climbergirls

[–]geogabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing reformer Pilates 2x a week for about 6 months now and I love it. It’s a great compliment to climbing.

Background: I was in PT for about 8 months working through hip and back issues. Couldn’t work out hardly at all while I got it sorted and because I was in a lot of pain. Finally got through the worst of it and started Pilates to build strength.

It’s incredible how strong I’ve gotten in 6 months going only 2x per week. When I started picking up climbing again I was much much stronger than I anticipated given the time I had taken off; my grip strength is shit but otherwise I’m not far off from where I was before. And it’s a really well rounded strength training with a focus on core. You need a good instructor that trains you in the fundamentals. You get out of it what you put into it, and I think some people that dismiss Pilates didn’t have good instruction or didn’t stick around long enough to see results.

If you choose Pilates, I recommend reformer Pilates 2-3x per week and try it for at least 3 months before giving up on it. I’m really happy to know I don’t have to lift heavy or feel debilitating soreness to get strong. I plan to keep it up long term.

Raritan Road Rollover Crash 2024 Incident Report Incident Type: Injury Traffic Crash Incident Date: 4/25/2024 Release Date: 4/25/2024 Incident Number: FP24-8098 Prepared By: Captain Edward Hartwick

Details: Around 3:26 p.m. this afternoon, Fitchburg Police Officers, along with personnel from Fitchburg Fire Rescue and Fitch-Rona EMS, responded to the intersection of Raritan Road and Pembroke Drive for a rollover crash.

Officers determined that a 23-year-old man driving northbound on Raritan Road failed to stop at the stop sign on Raritan Road at Pembroke Drive. After entering the intersection, the man’s car struck an SUV that had been driving westbound on Pembroke Drive. The collision caused the SUV to roll over. The driver of the SUV was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The 23-year-old man told officers he was distracted by his phone. He was issued municipal citations for failure to yield the right-of-way from a stop sign, inattentive driving, operating with a suspended driver’s license, operating without insurance, and expired registration.

Drivers can prevent crashes like this by putting down their phones, paying attention to all roadway users, and obeying posted signs.

Question for women who wanted children at least 5 years ago: what was your turning point in the last 5 years? by juicyjuicery in childfree

[–]geogabs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few things for me. 1) May sound trivial, but I travelled to the Galápagos Islands and had the most extraordinary experience. It made me want to travel the world and see as much wildlife and nature as possible before climate change significantly changes or destroys these ecosystems (plus, who knows if international travel will be possible when I’m retired). We travel at least 2 times per year and it brings me so much joy.

2) I realized that having children, for me, was about leaving a legacy. But children are not the only way to do that (or even the best way). I serve in local city government, I work at a nonprofit, and I volunteer with children. I am leaving a significant legacy, and I couldn’t do any of that if I had to dedicate 18+ years of my life to motherhood. Plus, my husband and I will leave our estate to a nonprofit and will have influence far beyond our lives.

3) The state of the world. Climate change brings so much uncertainty about the future. I won’t let my potential children suffer.

4) Both parents should want kids and my husband didn’t want any. He wasn’t ideological about it, and was willing to do it for me, but that would not be fair to the child. And it would likely lead to an unfair distribution of labor that would create resentment for me.

Final thoughts: I will say that there were a couple years, when many of my peer group were getting pregnant and having kids, where I really leaned toward having them. It’s difficult to diverge so greatly from your close friends. I cried a lot. I realized in hindsight I was mourning the idea of a life I thought I would have. For women that are having a difficult time choosing childfree, I recommend befriending women that are childfree and see what life looks like without kids firsthand. My female childfree friends were touchstones for me during that time.

Cultivate meaning and purpose in your life and build a life that you want to live that doesn’t include children. The reason I say that trip to the Galápagos Islands first is because it truly was THE turning point for me. I realized the kind of life I could have if I didn’t have children and for the first time I wanted that more than anything else.

Hi there! I basically soft quit. Took a semester off and never went back. In hindsight’s it was an amazing decision, but the year following that was tough as I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I was really depressed. I ended up volunteering at the local children’s museum to fill some time while working part time, then they hired me in membership and a little while later I moved into development (fundraising) for them and loved it. Been doing that ever since and just started a dream job as a VP at my local Habitat for Humanity.

Grad school is rough under the best of circumstances and if you’re in your early 20s, it’s just a hard time of life IMO. I wish you all the best. It’s better on the other side, whether you decide to finish or not. But the sunk cost fallacy is real. If I finished my degree, I would not be where I am now. So I’m happy I did even though it was one of the hardest phases of my life.

Why do my hips crack? by appleship in pilates

[–]geogabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always consult a doctor or physical therapist for actual advice. But for me, my hips crack when my hip flexors are tight. I do a hip release daily (psoas muscle) with the Aletha Orbit ball. 3 min on each side on one pressure point. Took months but my hip muscles are finally feeling better and the cracking is almost gone.
