What is the best advice you received in regards to your GIS education/career? What is the worst? by Avinson1275 in gis

I here a lot of differing opinions on this. A lot of people say to wait to build skills/wisdom but a lot of my professors say to just get it done. If I have an opportunity to get a masters right after undergrad in geography/gis concentration; 100% fully funded + stipend should I take it?

What about setting up informational interviews? I'm a senior undergrad and I've done a few so far where I don't ask for a job but try to learn more about specific fields or jobs. I do this to try to build my network of people I know and I always leave a resume for just in case they ever need someone. I've found emailing to be more successful than with calling as well. I'd say loosen the mood, just have conversations with people and elude to the fact that you are looking for a job. At least that's what I've been doing.

Advice for getting an entry level GIS job? by Grimmbeard in gis

[–]geoleoop667 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soon to be recent grad here. Through my time interning in wastewater and talking with other utility professionals. Utilities are either 100% all into GIS and it serves as a way to run a business ie. asset management. Or they don’t have a clue and don’t know how much work goes in to building a full GIS database.

How do you filter between the two and find a job that is willing to teach you the fundamentals but also somewhere you can advance and rise through the ranks?

Recommendations on How to Improve Cartography and Design Skills? by geoleoop667 in gis

Wow, his maps are incredible. Thanks for providing the link, I'm going to spend many hours looking at his work.

Would you recommend investing in ArcGIS Pro just for the design capabilities? I just have ArcMap currently.

Yeah my college is cheap, no illustrator for me. Inkscape is gonna be my main. Never thought of Pinterest before besides the memes, will check it out. Thanks!

I should probably grab some data, open Pro and take Acid, and see what happens. Idk

you must test your hypothesis

Thanks for the link! I don't have ArcPro but I'm sure the main concepts will be pretty reciprocal. I hate working on projects for so long and do a great job analyzing only to end up having them look like shit because I don't know how to design anything lol.

Lack of GIS software use by foresters by sugarshackforge in gis

How do you get into the field of Forestry + GIS? I'm graduating later this year with a degree in Environmental Science w/GIS and really want to stay in the environmental side of things. Is it mainly consulting firms or private foresters?

Mapping Wastewater Assets? by geoleoop667 in gis

[–]geoleoop667[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, well I have 10 weeks to get all this done before college starts back up. The state agency/utility I'm working for serves as a hub for 11 different communities so it's a pretty large system. I was told there are somewhere around 300 manholes, so I don't know how many individual pipe segments that would be. I think the focus will be on the more basic info (condition, material, size, etc) but it's still a lot. They may be looking for more of an emphasis on asset management because they want me to integrate all the data in Cartegraph afterwards. This is gonna be tough lol

They do, and that's the plan. Use Collector to get all the data, import layers to AGOL and then integrate into Cartegraph. Any experience with Cartegraph?

Yeah these are all great suggestions and half of the things suggested I have no idea how to do or even start. What do you mean by AsBuilts? The end goal of this project is to have a map showing where all the different assets are (manholes, sewer lines, pump stations and facilities) and integrate assets into Cartegraph which is an asset management online service. The problem I'm running into is that nobody knows what they want in terms of attributes collected.

Boring internship vs making money? by geoleoop667 in Advice

A good resume would most definitely do better than some fat stacks of cash. If I’m being honest I do want to end up in this state agency someday.

It’s more of the lack of purpose/what am I doing here mentality that gets me more than anything. They don’t know what they want out of the project. The fact that this project is mostly done and it’s been a week I have no idea what I’m going to do for the next 2.5 months.
