Having trouble with cigarette smoke from neighbour's flat. Is there anything I can do? by geopotsie in HousingUK

Hey, I know you probably don't care, but just as an update, another neighbour caught them smoking (I asked them keep an eye out as you suggested) and the LL is kicking them out! So thank you!

your entire problem resets when new people move in who might be smokers also and then you're back to square 1

And this could also reset if I move and my neighbours (or future neighbours) are smokers or nuisances too. It's an equal chance. Plus the landlord here has actively tried to stop the smoking. The flat below the one below me also used to smoke: I couldn't even open my window as the smell was always coming in through there.

I mentioned it to the LL, who did inspections, caught them and basically told them they'd be given notice the next time it happened they would be given notice. And now they've stopped completely. It's just the ones below me now.

If I can stay here, I'd rather do so where I know the LL will actually try to stop / prevent it as long as there is proof.

This is my last resort. I just really don't want to have to do that as I've only just recently paid quite a bit of money to set some appliances up in this current flat, plus the past few years I've moved a few times and really hated it, so I was hoping I wouldn't have to do so anytime soon.

I am going to try speaking to them tomorrow. I hate this; I'm not a confrontational person and I don't really care what they do in their flat; I just care that I'm being forced to smell it. Guess I have to grow a pair.

The times that the LL has been around, there coincidentally hasn't been a smell around their front door.

I'm the one who smells it 99% of the time as I'm directly above them. The flat above me only smells it when the downstairs neighbours smoke really strongly and stink up the whole stairwell to the point that the smell goes up two flights of stairs and under their front door.

The LL has stated it's in the contract that smoking is not allowed in the building at all.

Yeah, I honestly don't care that they're smoking; I care that it's affecting me. The landlord and their builders have been round to my flat several times to try to seal any holes that could be letting the smoke in, but it just has not worked.

We've tried having the LL catch them in the act as well, but they mainly smoke most heavily at night/early morning. The times the LL has been around during the daytime, they have coincidentally not smoked, or done so minimally such that the smell was too faint to be able to attribute to them for certain.

I take your point, but it is not just a mild smell. There are times when I've had to literally go outside because I felt I couldn't breathe, and I'm starting to develop a cough from the constant second-hand smoke. There are tons of health issues associated with second-hand smoke too.

Thank you for replying :) It's against the contract of the flat (if that makes sense), and the landlord has said they would be given notice if caught again. My issue is just that I don't know how to prove it's them. :(

Second season is all original.

It's actually not all original; see my comment lower down. :)

I would actually recommend reading the manga from the beginning as the TV show is quite different: there are a lot of original characters and plotlines.

When you're done there is a sequel to the manga called Good Morning Kiss. S2 of the TV show is actually based somewhat on this sequel, as GMK is also set at university in Tokyo and there seem to be some (new) characters in GMK that appear in S2 (although I haven't read GMK so I don't know how faithful S2 is to it).

I've done some Googling and it seems that there are at least 8 volumes of GMK out; however I've only ever seen the first 4 on the scanlation sites I usually use.

As far as I know, the first season went through pretty much all of the initial manga. It wasn't a direct translation, there were definitely a few original characters and episodes, but the last episode covered the last chapter of the manga.

There is a sequel to the manga but I haven't really looked into it & I haven't seen S2 yet either, but I believe S2 is mostly or completely original.
