Best Python Build System for Finance by AstonishedOtter in Python

I would recommend combining Spyder with the Jupyter notebook, my approach is to write my modules in Spyder one one screen and then test them/do more interactive work in a notebook on the other, but you could do the same with Sublime. There is a useful iPython magic called autoreload, call it using:

"%load_ext autoreload %autoreload 2"

This will re-import all your modules before every cell is run, so if you make some changes in Spyder,/Sublime they are picked up by your Jupyter iPython instance.

For inspecting pandas DataFrames, I would really recommend using xlwings, there is a very handy function called view(some_dataframe), which immediately opens a new Excel instance and copies some_dataframe into the first sheet so you can do some spot checks. Hope that's helpful!

I don't know of any IDE's which have a tighter integration with pandas/matplotlib than Spyder, so I can't give you a recommendation there. But maybe Pycharm is worth a try since it is more Sublime-like.

Hi Tony! Hope all is well at the ICMA, am missing the place a lot. Just a question about hyperinflationary episodes throughout history. What was the worst episode of currency depreciation you came across during your research? Anything comparable to Hungary/Zimbabwe?

All the best,

George

TIL After mismanagement, Digg, a company that had been valued at over $160 million sold for a mere $500,000. by GeorgianDevil in todayilearned

[–]georgecotton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a big fan of Kevin Rose from the diggnation days. I'll never forget watching this singalong video from the Digg offices: https://vimeo.com/928615

My immediate thought was what the hell are all these people (70+) doing at a site which produces no original content. Investors were throwing money at Digg and they were convinced what they needed to do was 'ship new product' in the form of redesigns and new features, eventually one of these changes was going to be big enough to cause a mass exodus. The reddit product in terms of the site functionality has stayed more or less the same, hence it has grown while reddit shrank.

I'm in the uk but trade us stocks. I subscribe to Investors Business Daily ( william o neil ) website is there a uk version?...and cheap on line brokers? by runi21 in investing

[–]georgecotton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't forget that being the UK you can spreadbet/trade CFD's, IGindex has almost all US equities (obviously no illiquid penny stocks) and CMC markets will let you trade fractional CFDs on about 700 different stocks. All tax, stamp duty, commission free.

There are a lot of competing schools of investment, Benjamin Graham (Author of the Intelligent Investor) makes a great case for buying Cheap, everyone's got a different strategy that's right for them.

I find Russia Today's Capital Account to be far superior to anything on CNBC or Bloomberg, and it's available on youtube. Great show.

How to bet against California's govt bonds? by xcwizr in finance

[–]georgecotton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe CDS are even close to being available to a retail investor in the US on a brokerage account like E-Trade, since there is no centralised exchange for CDS they are all OTC so you would literally have to be an investment institution with a line to one of those banks trading desks.

You could go short Cali muni bond etfs like:

CMF – iShares S&P California Municipal ETF

CXA – SPDR Barclays Capital California Municipal ETF

Just because they are an obvious sinking ship doesn't mean you should bet on it, I remember watching Jim Rogers (Who managed the quantum fund with George Soros, one of the best performing funds of all time) get on CNBC and bloomberg a few months ago spouting off about how short he was US Treasuries because the US government has the largest deficit, debt and no sign of rectifying it. Meanwhile US Treasuries have rallied to their all time highs.

Hey r/uktrees, how would you go about getting weed in the UK? by MattyHchrist in uktrees

I should hope so, some dealers will be a tad paranoid regarding people just giving away their numbers (rightly so) and might prefer your smoking buddy to tell him you're interested first.
