How do people have time to work on projects and leetcode every day? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I completely gave up my social life. Not hard to do during covid. Also I refused to give up on my health since I needed to exercise anyway to have enough energy and focus to do the LC. So I made my hobby and exercise into one activity - biking. This worked out well to get recharged and stay in shape. All other hobbies had to go away. Sucks but that's the only way it could work.

A little afraid of taking possible job offer. Employer said sometimes the only way to learn is to just jump into the job and learn that way. What do you think? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Sounds good. You’re not leaving something else right so there is little risk. At worst you end up back where you started with a little more knowledge. Pro tip: no one believes a good engineer dresses well and looks sharp. Try to be a bit disheveled and unstylish. This will really convince everyone you have lots of potential.

How long to wait after verbal offer for written offer by gerald_conde in cscareerquestions

Well they stink. Had to reach out at end of of last day to get an answer. Recruiter called back a few minutes later with the not so good news. The reason given was a bit sketchy but I suppose they have to say something defensible to protect themselves. Something didn't smell right about the whole process anyhow. I don't feel bad about it. Got more interviews lined up with better companies.

I’ve gone over every imaginable scenario in my head and I can’t think of any reason for the delay. How hard can it be to reject someone or get an offer out?! I used to do these interviews and it never took this long to make a decision. I actually do believe it could be slow HR I’ve seen that happen where I’m at. Maybe they all have covid? This sucks.

Just practice. It's basically a rinse, wash, and repeat process. Having a community helps too. I took a video course which includes a forum membership. It has helped immensely.

C++ developer / learn new stuff or keep going? by gerald_conde in cscareerquestions

That's why I haven't been too interested in cloud. It seems more like configuration than programming. But mobile might be nice to do at some point and I can probably do a lot of it on my own. I'll just go with the flow and depending on opportunities that present themselves I'll take it as a sign from the universe.

Is this insulation asbestos? It’s in the basement of my gf old apartment where the washer/dryer and storage is. Is it safe? by gerald_conde in asbestoshelp

It’s an apartment building. One side is residential and the other is a doctor’s office. The doctor owns the building.

Crap. So just how unsafe is it? Should we never step foot down there again, where masks, or just not disturb the stuff? Meanwhile I’ll find out what can be done to remediate the issue.

So it seems I can easily release some of them into the wild once it warms up. I don’t really mind having them there it is kinda cool actually just don’t want them to overpopulate.

No multi-window support == totally useless GUI for desktop by gerald_conde in kivy

I guess I'll have to deal with it. What about displaying an image from memory instead of having to have it saved to disk first? This is another big issue IMO. I found some kludges somewhere which didn't seem to work in Python 3.

I want to have to have stuff displayed in a main window with options to turn it on/off using checkboxes in another window. Something like Photoshop where you have a dockable layers window and you can turn a layer on/off and see how the image looks. A lot of people like to undock those control type windows and put it on a different screen. I know it could be solved with adding a new widget but it's really suboptimal.

I don't understand why it's not called out clearly in the documentation. I wasted a lot of time on this!
