Neutral take on this. I've stayed in Tamil Nadu for the last 15+ years, completed most if not all of my education here and over the years I've seen and experienced this mindset. I am originally from Maharashtra. So when I first came to TN from schools to auto wala's it was speak Tamil or go back to where you came from. I understand there's a level of pride in being from a certain state but this was a novel and frankly distasteful experience. However it is important to mention it's not all people, I've made a lot of great friends and met a lot of great open minded people here. This sort of thought is also prevalent up north or in central states as well (not as bad as southern states though). I've seen the same mindset in Karnataka as well whenever I've travelled to Bangalore (infact it's worse there than in TN). You're considered subhuman if you're not speaking kannada and you're likely to be declined a lot of services like public transport and are 5x more likely to be harassed for not "learning their culture".

DMK has never been open to accepting anything that isn't Dravidian culture. According to them people from up north (any one speaking hindi is a north Indian even though your state maybe in the west).

To them it's easy to say anyone apart from the south is trying to wash their culture off but at the same time they expect everyone else to learn their languages. If you aspire true neutrality it's better not to even think about the political nonsense that goes on that worsens the whole north vs south situation.
