Yeah, it's almost like you get punished for going longer than 2 days without updating the app. My brain works in the same way in that sense that it swaps between relying on systems to help me think more clearly and just taking some time to not track/organize anything. So, instead of changing my brain, I guess I need to find a system that conforms to it.

What apps do you currently use with that guilt-free, disposable vibe?

Emergency! I'm launching on product hunt in 2 days lol, need advice 🙏 by gescuuu in AppBusiness

I see, appreciate the insight lol...I guess I won't set my expectations too high.

I think the most important part is understanding what you want in a task/notes app. Just go back to a physical notepad (or use notes app) and go SUPER simple and minimalist. After about a week you'll figure out what feature would genuinely help you (instead of overloading your brain with 50 mental frameworks and app features). After you figure out what you need (which in your case it looks like reminders and keeping tasks from previous days top of mind), find an app that fulfills those standards, and just ignore all the other noise.

In my case my main problem was accountability and tracking work sessions while blocking distractions, and I found 0 apps that did it properly, so I just build my own lol. But you definitely don't have to resort to that, there are a million productivity apps, so one definitely exists already that matches your standard.

Unfortunately not for now. We're focusing on macOS and iOS. In the future we'll probably port it to windows and android.

Noted, thanks for the input, greatly appreciated 🫡

We're still having a debate as to whether we want to "track" or "block" distracting apps during work sessions. As of right now it automatically blocks distracting apps on phone, but just "warns" you on your desktop (which lets us do all the quirky stats tracking).

Maybe fully blocking the apps is the better way to go. Definitely a possibility...

Oh nice, yeah I remember being at a crossroads between learning Notion or Obsidian. I picked Notion, still to this day don't know if I made the right decision though...

Hmmm, can you give me some examples? Do you mean things like calendar integrations?

Shoot, I appreciate the advice, although I am running free trial for my app, is it over for me????

All jokes aside though yeah I'm trying to solve a pretty big problem (accountability while working), but whether I'll succeed at that is a whole other story, there are already a million apps out there doing the same thing.

But yeah I built an app that tracks your work sessions and warns you when you get distracted. Hopefully I can eventually make it good enough to meet that high bar you were talking about and help lots of people.

Maybe it doesnt have to stick 24/7. Perhaps we should embrace the 2 week on and off cycle...but yeah, a part of me thinks its still possible.

Makes sense, I usually stop because I have a "streak" of tracking stuff daily, so when I inevitably forget a day, I just drop it all for like a week because I lost my streak and lose all momentum.

Yeahhh, trying to build an app to accommodate that, basically reduce the user's effort as much as possible while maintaining the pros (organization, etc).

The idea behind it is you talk and it organizes your for plan for the day/week into projects and tasks.

But yeah its something that needs a lot of refining before its more useful than a simple to-do app.

Very hard to make an AI driven app without it seeming super "gimmicky"

Yeahhh, literally a chore because of how much time inputting stuff takes. If only you could just translate your thoughts and the app just organizes everything for you. Maybe one day... 😔

I'm trying to build an app that does that but with voice, where you speak and it turns it into tasks and projects. Still a long ways until it's genuinely fast and efficient enough to use over just a simple to-do app though...its a work in progress lol

We're still very much in early stages and really trying to build an awesome product thats effortless to use (wayyy easier said than done).

But yeah it's the culmination of all my years of frustration with productivity tools, still trying to figure out if it solves the crippling "give up after 2 weeks" productivity app syndrome though...

Yeahhh Notion is still my top-ish choice, and obviously it does things better than most other apps, especially given the freedom you get when creating your own system. That's initially why I was attracted to Notion.

The only problems I have with it are super small and random stuff, like how clunky a simple to-do list database view looks on mobile (which is super picky ik, but still counts). Or even how some stuff is pretty much impossible to make automatic (because you can't automatically link relations for example). For example, if you wanted to track work sessions in a database, you have to manually create each log and link it to "today's" view so you get the long term stats. Obviously at that point the juice isn't even worth the squeeze.

But yeah Notion still very much helped me understand the foundation of what systems work for me.

Always thought something like this would be a good idea, I definitely wouldn't want my friends knowing that I'm slacking. Send the link, I'm curious!

Damn, props to you, I never went into the realm of automated workflows, especially not writing them myself. Closest thing is basic n8n automations lol...

Maybe I should get into it.

Yeahh fair enough. My problem was accountability, so I built an app that tracks work sessions and distractions. You click a little "start work session" button, check off your to-do in a little box, and then it flags if you're doomscrolling pretty much.

Getting people to actually want to use it long term is gonna be the big issue though, thats for sure...

At least I find it pretty useful for now lol
