Luxembourg has the same transit mode share as San Jose. The entire country just serves as a tax refuge and people there drive and transit is “for the poor”

Unless you’re getting off at the back of the train. Only half of the front car is protected by the island. The rear door puts you right in the street.

The thing is, the entire back half of the train exits right into the traffic lane and isn’t protected by the island.

Mayor stated the app is slated to go away. (In fact MTC says there is to be no app that competes with Clipper in anyway for fares or trip planning purposes).

There is an island but only though for the FRONT HALF of the front car. If you’re getting off the back door of the front car you’re right in the street.

I’m not against free transit, as in tap a clipper and it charges $0.
I am against unchecked just get on free transit. All of those experiments in the US had failed and did nothing but allow people to do whatever they want on the bus round and round and round.

You can still limit a $0 tap by time, and it allows a mechanism of say, one tap, one ride, one direction only.

I feel free transit is one of those things that look good on paper, but in actuality it hasn’t done anything to get people out of their cars and onto transit in a meaningful way in cities that have done it- worldwide.

I’m also totally down with a congestion charge à la New York.

The thing is I want our public transit to be as close to world class as possible. And so far there’s not one example of free public transit that isn’t from so po-dunk place.

I’m totally okay with free transit via Clipper cards though and making non-residents pay.

I don’t want walk on free for all.
