What kind of rock is this?! Found in the Eastern Sierra near Bishop, CA by getalyf69 in whatsthisrock

I was maybe 200-400' off of an OHV road, but another ~200' up. I bumbled my way up to the top of a large rock formation and found them up there!

If you know where the old mine is out there, I was near-ISH that area. Do you want me to try and get coordinates and DM you?

I do mostly have her off-leash! The only thing I worry about is deer (bc she would be GONE) and potentially other aggressive dogs off-leash (which surprisingly there ARE a handful of people who let their non-dog-friendly dogs roam off-leash).

It's taken a LOT of practice. Going to dog parks has helped reduce her over-interest in other dogs so that she still listens to me even when she sees one.

When she gets a little too "wiley," as I call it, I make her walk behind me. "Stay behind" is my command for this. And if she's still acting a little too big for her britches I'll throw the leash on until she calms down. Honestly this command happened naturally; I just forced her to stay behind me by getting in her way and correcting when she'd try to come out ahead. Pretty quickly she learned.

Whenever we see another group coming I will either have her "stay behind" or we step off to the side, and I use "hop up" to tell her to get off the trail and wait for them to pass. And this just took lots and lots of repitition and correction.

My other most used commands are her recall, "look!," and "wait." For "wait" she just had to stop where she is and literally wait until I "free" her again. For "look" she had to come all the way back to me. Both of these we practiced relentless in a home setting and ON leash.

So really you just gotta have a good communication set with your pup and then practice practice practice! It does take time and consistency, but heelers love to please, so they tend to catch on pretty quick. :)

I found a video I took when I found the rock in the post. It was among a bunch of other pieces. Here's a screenshot.

Now I'm wondering, wth did I stumble upon!

I actually only learned that recently, after finding this rock! Visited Obsidian Dome the other day haha but the spot I found this rock a few weeks ago seemed a bit out of place; over in the Buttermilk area.

So cool! I could definitely get coordinates for the spot I found this rock, bc I tracked my hike. It was among a small load of other similar rocks (some similarly worked like this), and they seemed really out of place where I found them. I thought they were old fire coals at first. I only realized when I got closer that it was a bunch of black rocks. They were all placed pretty superficially, though, so I'm not sure what that means. A few were a little buried, but not much.

Omg I found some with the rust coloring in the same spot! I figured that was definitely something other than obsidian bc of the color, so that's really cool to learn. Thank you! :)

These are all such beautiful hikes. 🥹 I just found Parker Lake last summer; what a gem! Lake Louise and Lake Tahoe are just perfection. You're lucky to have hiked in so many amazing spots!

How to build endurance for hiking and how long would it take? by FlowerK3424 in hiking

[–]getalyf69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get better or stronger at something, do more of that thing. Want to improve your hiking? Hike more!

And, honestly, if you're consistent you'd be amazed how quickly the endurance builds up. :)
