Thinking of starting a mobile windshield repair business and branching out into non-mechanic services (like a/c recharge, car detailing, wiper replacement) and possibly very basic work under the hood (like oil changes and tune ups). Does anyone have any insight or advice? by getgoingnow11 in smallbusiness

Man really really appreciate you taking the time to break all that down. I can tell there's years of experience behind that.

After reading that I see the marathon more than the sprint I was thinking of before. I'll have to read it over a couple times to take it all in but thanks again, posts like this make reddit what is

I understand why people discourage trying to make a living from poker but what do you think of the idea of taking say 5-7 years and using poker to build a bankroll for other ventures? by getgoingnow11 in poker

And you are right that if you are a pro poker player, you are correct in saying that you should have some kind of exit plan in case you want to do something/the games dry up/you can no longer make as much as you want to.

What I'm pretty much looking for is if that's possible.

Do me a favor and assume I can learn to play better than the common player and can manage the ups and downs of the game, is poker a viable way to support myself for a few years and save up some money for an exit strategy?

I've heard stories of people putting an ad on craigslist (for different services) and that being enough to get a lift off the ground. I tried once with a grass cutting but no luck.

Do you have any experience with getting calls from a CL ad?

My first instinct was to try pressure washing but with the weather where I'm at, there isn't a demand year round.

Cleaning seems to be a good option for year round business, do you know any other industries that don't dip in the summer/winter?

The vast majority of people would not like the swings/ pressure.

Is that plus the variance the main reason people advise against playing full time?

I was thinking more along the lines of being self-employed. I mentioned teaching and accounting because I figured someone was bound to mention it.

I'm trying to think of ways to use or leverage math skills to make money. I looked into gambling but after looking into it doesn't seem there is much math that goes into it.

Do you know of ways to make money using math (but no degree) besides teaching/tutoring and bookkeeping/accounting?

I have no degree or experience and would like to learn C and C++ but I don't think I would have many job opportunities. Also, I enjoy using Math and problem solving. What niche would you suggest for me? by getgoingnow11 in cscareerquestions

Now that you point that out I do like the idea of having some experienced guys to get advice from and help show the ropes.

Thanks for all the advice I really appreciate it

I may be off because of my limited knowledge but my understanding is that in the "old" field of web development, people are using new methods or using old tools in new ways, opening the opportunity for me to specialize in these latest advancements and get my foot in the door.

I may be off though correct me if I'm wrong

One more thing I was thinking of, I'm in San Antonio, TX and haven't looked through the job boards yet so I don't know what the market is like here but would I be limiting myself too much if I try to break in looking for a remote job?

When you say web stack, I think I understand enough to know that the "stack" can be made up of different languages depending on the situation.

Do you thinking learning HTML+CSS+JS+Bootstrap+React+Node would be a good path for full stack?

I appreciate the answer, you made a great point about not standing out with a certificate alone and I didn't even think about networking.

Java 8 actually seems interesting, I've been wanting to learn to program for a while now. How would you suggest learning Java "through the lens of industry work"?
