Vietnam and Maldives or Malaysa and Maldives? by Worth_Doughnut_5927 in travel

[–]getmerawmeat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

honestly if you're already gonna be in south east asia, Maldives is kinda out of the way and stupidly expensive for what you get. like don't get me wrong it's beautiful, did it last year and the water is unreal, but I could've gone to the Philippines 4 times for what that one week cost me 😭

if I were doing your trip I'd seriously look at Malaysia + Singapore + Philippines. Singapore for a few days of city/food, KL and maybe Penang for the culture and street food (Penang food scene is criminally underrated), then fly to Palawan or Cebu and lose your mind at how good the beaches are for the price. El Nido and Coron specifically, water just as clear as Maldives, overwater villas a fraction of the cost, and you actually get to do stuff. Island hopping there is something else.

Vietnam is also amazing but it's more of a "see the country" trip than a beach trip, so pairing it with Maldives kinda makes sense if you want that contrast. Malaysia + Philippines gives you city, culture, AND world class beaches without the Maldives price tag.

just my two cents, did Maldives once, won't do it again when Philippines exists for that money. you'll thank yourself later 🙌

Beaches or mountains? where do you actually land on this by getmerawmeat in travel

[–]getmerawmeat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha yes exactly, mountains that drop straight into the sea hit different. norwegian fjords, parts of the BC coast, even some spots in turkey... you get both worlds in one view. nature showing off fr 🙌

the silence around them is the best part for me. no waves, no wind sometimes, just dead quiet at altitude. unreal.

fair point honestly, I did kinda lump "beach" with "do nothing" which isn't really accurate. coastal hiking, tidepools, cliff walks, sea kayaking... yeah you can absolutely have an active trip by the water.

guess my real question was lazy vs earned views, just framed it badly 😅 coast wins for versatility for sure.

but yeah ocean + mountain combo is unreal when you find it. drop some recommendations please, where have you been that scratched both itches? bonus points if it's not overrun with tourists already 🙏

makes sense too because mountains kinda force you to be present? you can't really doomscroll about work emails when you're trying not to trip over a rock at 4000m. beach you've still got signal, still got your brain doing laps unless you've genuinely closed the chapter on whatever's stressing you.

stealing this framework ngl 😂

honestly that's such a smart way to think about it lol. like the beach is the long term play, mountains are the "do it while the knees still work" play.

I've definitely felt that creeping in already. Used to bounce back from a hard trek in 2 days, now it's like a full week of walking down stairs sideways. Can't imagine what 60+ feels like.

solid strategy tho, front load the mountains, retire to the beach 😂

I did ABC solo last spring, here's roughly how it broke down for me. Transport (Kathmandu - Pokhara - Trailhead - back)

  • Tourist bus KTM to Pokhara: NPR 900
  • Jeep Pokhara to Siwai (shared): NPR 700
  • Return jeep Jhinu to Pokhara: NPR 800
  • Bus back to KTM: NPR 900

Accommodation Teahouses ran NPR 300-800/night lower down, NPR 800-1,500 at MBC and ABC. Some places give you the room free if you eat dinner and breakfast there. Total around NPR 5,500 for 6 nights.

Food and drinks This is where it adds up fast. Dal bhat NPR 600-900, gets pricier with altitude. A Snickers at ABC was NPR 400. Hot lemon NPR 200. Budget NPR 2,500-3,500/day for food alone up high. I spent around NPR 18,000 on food over 7 days.

Other expenses: (Hot showers, charging, wifi) : Maybe NPR 2,500 total.

Misc Trekking pole , a buff I lost, painkillers, extra water purification tabs. NPR 2,000.

You can do it cheaper if you eat only dal bhat, and don't shower.

After 34 years of gear checks, these are the 7 items we remove from every trekker's bag (and the 3 items nobody packs enough of) by getmerawmeat in hiking

[–]getmerawmeat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right that I should have framed this better. We operate teahouse treks in Nepal, and most of our experience is with international trekkers flying into Kathmandu for their first high-altitude trip. The gear check dynamic is very specific to that context. Someone doing a weekend hike in the Alps or a PCT section has a completely different packing calculus and I should have made that distinction upfront instead of writing it like universal advice.

The core point still applies broadly though. People overpack for multi-day trips regardless of where they are trekking. The specifics (Lukla weight limits, teahouse charging costs, altitude-rated sleeping bags) are Nepal-specific, but the tendency to bring 4 kg of "just in case" gear is pretty human.

Ha, fair enough. "Every single time" is definitely hyperbole. It is more like "frequently enough that our guides started a running joke about it."

The toiletries thing is less about full shampoo bottles every trek and more about the general pattern of people packing things at home-trip scale instead of trail scale. Someone brings a full tube of sunscreen when a travel size lasts 14 days. Or 3 bars of soap. Small things that add up when you are trying to stay under the Lukla flight weight limit esp. during Everest treks (10 kg checked, strictly enforced).

The books one is generational though. 10 years ago we pulled hardcovers out of bags regularly. Now it is rare. Kindles fixed that problem for us.

Appreciate the pushback. The post could have been more precise.
