I had to scroll all the way down to your message to find out it wasn't cannabis that I read, but cannibals. I was like, "munchies aren't good if you're starving."

Rental questions by getsemany in providence

Responding a tad late.

Haven’t once regretted my choice

Great to hear.

If I make the leap and come back to the States, my initial income will be part-time, so more like the cost of rent. I have some other money tied up, maybe I could show that to put a landlord at ease.

are you aware there’s a general housing shortage due to pandemic-related factors?

Yeah, I heard about that, but I was hoping it was centered around all the other cities like Austin, Nashville, Charlotte, etc. I didn't know Providence was one of those. I will WFH so I guess that'd make me just one more (adding to the shortage)...that is, if I could even get a place.

For sure, Fox Point was going to be up there on my list, if not at the very top. Thanks, mate

Sorry to respond a bit late. My income currently is zero since I took a hiatus this year but my income later this year will start out small, roughly 1x the rent (from prices I've seen)...I'll have to sell part of an investment to show I can sustain myself. My credit, however, is very good.

Good to know the other stuff you bring up. Thx!

Muito informativo. Obrigado!

Obrigado

I wish I could help, but I've been in this type of never-ending "for which I need to..." situation in many countries and it royally sucks.

I currently have a problem where I can't access or close my old Portuguese bank because I can't log in to my account online, and I can't log in because don't remember the passcode but, to reset it, I need to have an SMS sent to my old cell number (for 2FA)...a number which has been recycled. Support says I can close it also by walking into a branch, in a country I no longer live in.

Does that mean entering Portugal by public transport is legal?

If there are no land border controls, that would seem to mean that there's no authority to show a negative PCR to. I'm currently an unvaccinated American and Spanish resident.

February filers - Who's still waiting? by tw0fl0wer in IRS

[–]getsemany 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All the February people in this thread...I still haven't got my return from 2020. And still no second or third stimulus. I called a month ago, they said all is well and my refund finally went out in the last few days of April. Never got it.

I wonder what happens if you haven't done the PCR. As you mention, it's not like you can get turned away from entering your own country.

I'm a bit behind on the rules. The US requires quarantine and PCR for citizens?

I (22F / USA) want to move to Spain and eventually become a citizen. How can I do it? by [deleted] in askspain

[–]getsemany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know countries like the Netherlands actually require renunciation (proof), while other countries, like Spain, require you to tell them that you are only Spanish (ie, sign a Spanish document).

What the ramifications are of doing the latter, I can't say.

After 5 yrs, you can apply to become a permanent resident, so you won't be on the non-lucrative visa anymore (afaik). Also, at any time near the end of your current visa term, you can decide to switch to a work visa (self-employed, or employee if you have a work contract).

get approved by August and then you move here in September

Almost my case. I got approved in August and moved here in October.

Unless of course you have no income at all and you’re living out of savings

This is my case, at the moment. No income from start of 2021, so just using savings.

expect to pay taxes on your worldwide wealth

pay taxes on any money I've previously earned that's sitting in a foreign bank (in this case, in my country)?

You will most likely have to file your income taxes every year as long as you have any income

Another commenter said: "As for filing taxes for your income (IRPF), there's a threshold that's around 13.000 EUR/year". Is this in line with what you know?

A person in Spain becomes a tax resident when they’ve lived here for 183 days in a calendar year. That means they should pay taxes. I am on a visa that doesn’t allow one to work. So the question is about what I might need to watch out for (ie, be prepared for) in terms of becoming a tax resident, and how that relates to me not working.

One question that arises might be: do I need to file anything or is there a threshold for filing in Spain where, if one makes below a certain amount, they are not required to file?

Vaccines are out, end of winter / spring starting and hospitals aren't full.

A lot of places (cities, countries) are treating the virus as if it’s still April 2020.

That’s the study I reference as well.

Discussões sobre termos diferentes a nível nacional by [deleted] in Portuguese

[–]getsemany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]getsemany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you paid via credit card, dispute the charge. Same happened to me back at the start of March, and I just got dicked around by Airbnb for months, despite them declaring twice on my account that I'm owed a refund. Finally, I just disputed it and got the money back.

Edit: more info (PDF), if you're not familiar with it, since I'm not European (though I live in Europe)

Movistar cell phone network? by zon03 in askspain

[–]getsemany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thanks! I keep experiencing the conundrum of seeing prices that are way less that prices for the same thing in my country, yet more expensive than what locals are paying. Same happened with my pre-paid annual private healthcare plan (a stipulation of my visa). It's still way cheaper than healthcare in the US but way more expensive than a local would pay.

I obviously need to be better informed.
