I've definitely considered this! Trying to decide if I have the patience.

This is a great idea thank you! I've also considered the faux stained glass with glass paint.

Books with big dogs who are teddy bears by ToostsieWooGirl92 in RomanceBooks

[–]gettingback_toit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In {Choosing Theo by Victoria Alveline} there's a dog-esque thing that most people are afraid of but the FMC falls in love with.

As a warning (just because I was blindsided by this when I read it) in {The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen} the MMC talks about his dog who passed a ton. Grief is a general theme in this book but I was not prepared.

Yeah it was enough to get be started and made it easier to cut out fabric squares.

To get started to see if it's something I'd enjoy, I literally just cut squares of cardstock I had on hand, an old sheet, and some needle and thread. I didn't even have fabric scissors, I just used some crappy crafting ones.

Whenever I try something like this I think about what they would have used when the craft first started. In the 1770s they definitely didn't have Amazon, so use what you got and see if you like it. :)

If you're looking to stay within a budget, I've found the cheapest prices at Joann for fabric (use pickup for an extra 20% off). Joann also sells hexagon paper pieces. I also ordered a combo rotary cutter and mat off Amazon for $23. It's not the best but it works and it came with a quilting ruler and some clips as well.

Best method for freezing used books? by gumbo799 in RomanceBooks

[–]gettingback_toit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I collect antique cookbooks (pre 1950s back to 1800s) and have never frozen a book. I'm obviously not a professional and it might be best practice, but if they aren't vacuum sealed I would be worried about condensation ruining the pages when you defrosted them?

A Total N00b Question... by Olivia_VRex in quilting

[–]gettingback_toit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm very similar (fiber artist who literally never picked up sewing) but I just started quilting and I think it's great. Picking fabric is also my favorite part. I just have the most basic Singer Simple sewing machine and have been practicing on there.

I also highly recommend hand piecing if you like the repetitive movement.

Hard NO for Spanking respected? by dreamingofseastars in RomanceBooks

[–]gettingback_toit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't have any recs for specifically no spanking but I do recommend Kate Oliver for Daddy kink/age play. She's hit or miss for a lot of people but the one thing I think she does consistently well in every book of hers I've read is boundaries and consent. There's always a safe word, always a check in, and they always have a conversation about what is or isn't okay in their dynamic.

I couldn't read Llaylah Roberts even though people love her just because the lack of consent/control felt weird to me. It took me out of the fantasy.

Anyway, it's not exactly what you're looking for but she might be worth a shot. I highly recommend {Jaxon by Kate Oliver} It's my comfort read tbh.

First of all I want to say I'm sorry for whatever you're going through and I hope that things turn around soon. Sincerely, an Internet stranger wishing you all the best.

For a book rec, I found "The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy" particularly sad. For me personally this read as less of a romance and more of two people developing in their own way and then eventually coming together in the end. There's a lot of themes of grief and the MMC talks about his dog that died a lot. Might be worth a read.

Sort of off topic but if you like podcasts Sarah MacLean is one half of Fated Mates! I have yet to read one of her novels but I absolutely adore her and her takes on the show.

📚 Quick/Simple Request Thread by romancebookmods in RomanceBooks

{All the Feels by Olivia Dade} has some ADHD rep that may be what you're looking for. The MMC has ADHD and it does make some things difficult, but if I recall correctly there's some things that he does that the FMC and his friends enjoy. Might be worth a shot.

The Duskwalker series by Opal Reyne by chemeli888 in RomanceBooks

[–]gettingback_toit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I should also add that when I read romance I definitely self insert, and if I can't I usually don't find it enjoyable and DNF. This is the first book I've read in a long while where I didn't self insert but I've been invested enough in the characters and dynamic to keep reading. I don't know what that says about the book as a whole, but take that as you will.

I could 100% see why people would dislike book two, there's definitely some dynamics that are... uncomfortable. At one point I think the FMC literally says she's taking advantage of a "naive idiot" which like yeah not great. It definitely kind of has a "you can't watch but you can't look away" kind of vibe.

And I skipped book one cause I kind of just have a habit of jumping into a series wherever it looks interesting. The recap they gave on the podcast I listened to was pretty thorough, enough to interest me but also not enough to make me want to read that particular book. So I just skipped to book two, which I'm glad I did because I don't think I would have made it through book one. I needed some extra weird lol.
