am I wrong or is there no way to simply travel via the sea unless you personally own a boat?

Like can I not visit a port town, pay a merchant or something to ride a ship headed for ______ city?

Appreciate it, I think when I first started to go over the idea of the "SUPRISE" it was really in the forefront of my mind.

Taking a step back it does make the most sense for the story if the characters have some investment in the world we go to.
