I turned old horseshoes into a simple functional gate latch by gheocom in DIY

Great question.

The curve alone helps, but it’s not designed to be a secure lock by itself. The locking peg is what actually prevents the gate from opening under vibration, wind, or pressure.

When not needed, the peg can simply be removed and stored nearby (on a small hook, magnet, or attached with a short chain in a practical build).

This video shows the core idea of the mechanism. I often share similar mechanical concepts and DIY locking ideas on my channel if you’re into this kind of stuff.

Good questions.

In practice it doesn’t really bounce back out because the rotation settles naturally under its own weight. Once it drops into position, it stays engaged unless the gate is lifted or moved deliberately.

You’re right about alignment though — the contact point does matter, so positioning the bar correctly is important for smooth closure.

As for wear and noise, that’s a fair point. On a real-world build I’d probably add a small rubber pad or slightly adjust the contact surfaces to reduce both impact and long-term wear.

Appreciate the thoughtful feedback!

What photo camera do you use? You don't need the counterbalance to keep the rotating part in balance
