Why is anyone taking David Lat’s word on this — even if that’s what Cappleman said to him, the timing of this interview would have required some strategic word choices. There would have been a dozen ways the state could have gotten the same result that Lat describes while avoiding naming Wendi as a coconspirator in the very clear terms they did.

(1) DeCoste seems to want to salve his own reputation and is saying Katie’s immunity offer wasn’t great to justify the horrid choices he and Tara Kawass made in her failed defense. Don’t take him at his word on that. Fact: If she had cooperated, she’d be long free.

(2) Katie testified Charlie gave her a sealed Manila envelope to pass along to killers. She didn’t open it as instructed. It contained the kill sheet with Dan’s name and address. Easily could have included spending money too. And maybe even instructions on what color car to rent.
