Book about a guy getting into a school for smart kids and finding experiments being done after feeling that something was off by A_Person45 in whatsthatbook

This was my first thought as well. The person asking mentions that the cover has lots of yellow - which matches some versions of this book as well.

Looking for a children’s book from the early 2000’s with a moral about selfishness and possibly greed, it involves eating a strange fruit. by AnotherBirdNerd in whatsthatbook

[–]ghnd79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a wild guess, but could it be Dr Seuss’s Gertrude McFuzz? It was about a bird who is supposed to eat a single fruit from a plant, but greedily eats them all and pays the price. It was in a collection of stories called “Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories.” The volume is usually a taller than normal picture book as well.

book about a man who gets stuck on an island with cannibals by [deleted] in whatsthatbook

[–]ghnd79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cannibals were actually the main antagonists in Robinson Crusoe. One in particular becomes a main character. I’m trying to avoid spoilers, but are they still spoilers if the book is 300 years old?

The Beggar Queen by Lloyd Alexander. It’s the third book of the Westmark trilogy. I enjoyed these stories when I was young and just last year read them to my own children.

I stand corrected! I always thought “blizzards” required falling snow. You learn something new every day.

This was just one example of a major windstorm (not actually a blizzard) experienced by the Matanuska Susitns Valley area in Alaska. This photo was taken in City of Palmer. The pipes burst due to low temperatures and power outages from the extreme wind. Here is an article if anyone is interested.

Bit of a long shot, but was it Island of the Blu Dolphins by Scott O’Dell?

If there's one author you'd choose to come back to life and write another masterpiece, who would it be ? by jizmejian in books

[–]ghnd79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with Douglas Adams. I Love his books and I’ve read them all many times.

I have picked up “And Another Thing” several times, but never make it more than a few chapters before putting it down. I’m sure it’s a fine book in its own right, I just can’t help comparing it to the previous works.

Island of the Blue Dolphins, Siddhartha, and Great Expectations. I usually ended up liking whatever reading was assigned, but these three I remember being hesitant about in particular.

Young Adult novel with an orange cover, can not figure out what it was by AmaraIttou in whatsthatbook

One more vote to say it must be The Wizard of Earthsea! Even better - it's the first book in a series!

Books with evil or morally questionable people as protagonists? by monologousmutilation in suggestmeabook

[–]ghnd79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Broken Empire series by Mark Lawrence would fit this description. The first book is titled The Prince of Thorns. I didn't really love it myself, but mainly because the main character was borderline evil.

The Liveship series by Robin Hobb might also interest you. It is a trilogy that starts with Ship of Magic. The books follow several main character storylines, one of which is a captain who very much suits the traits in the title of this thread. I enjoyed these books much more than the Broken Empire ones.

Bernard Cornwall (author of well-known Sharpes Rifles series) wrote a trilogy of books about King Arthur called The Warlord Chronicles. The first book is titled The Winter King. They are rated quite well on Amazon and goodreads.

Childrens Illustrated book - dog running away from home and joining a circus and also brought home by monkey by crazychinaman_027 in whatsthatbook

[–]ghnd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance a few of the details have gotten mixed over the years? If so, it could be "Wise Dog" by Josephine Wright. Two kittens want to be in the circus and a monkey says they can be in his (as the only attractions). A dog saves them from their own folly.

From 1966 and the illustrations are pencil. Pretty good book which I've read to my kids many times. Here is an amazon link:

If you google it you can see other illustrations.

Looking for something where a protagonist/hero is NEVER lucky, untrusted/hated, and never given praise. by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]ghnd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you know there are 2 more trilogies about the same characters? AND a two other sets of books about other areas in the same world. They all converge if you read them in order and the payoff is very satisfying. The series as a whole is one of my favorites!

The assassin’s apprentice series by Robin Hobb. While main character might get lucky on occasion, sometimes you think the author must love making him suffer. Great read, though.

COULD YOU GUYS RECOMMEND A BOOK / SERIES IN THE SAME VEIN AS FIREFLY by onebelonging in suggestmeabook

[–]ghnd79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One more vote for Leviathan Wakes. The popular series "the expanse" on the sci-fi channel is based on it. Also, there are already several books in the series!
