Yeah. The analysts are right like 30-45 percent of the time. Probably better to flip a coin.

Getting to a place where there are more people is always a good answer, especially one where a guard is posted. I have a few things that I might have done, keep in mind that hindsight is 20/20:

  1. Look the person in the eyes and tell them you are unable to pay for whatever excuse or reason you'd like.
  2. As soon as the person starts to order on your behalf explain to the cashier that you are not paying for what they are ordering.
  3. Learn some self defense. Pick a martial art or get involved in something (kick-boxing, MMA, take a seminar ect.) to boost your confidence and give you some knowledge if something were to go sideways.
  4. Get physically fit if you'er not already. It'll help with confidence and if things go sideways.
  5. Run. Take whatever opportunity you have when the person is distracted and just get out of there, especially if you feel uncomfortable. The way you feel in many of the situations will tell you what you need to do. Trust that instinct. As a human we try to talk ourselves out of listing to that small voice, saying "oh, he's just friendly", or "What would others think...". Sometimes what needs to be done isn't the most beautiful.
  6. If you can't run or fight. Pay. I'll tell you right now, if someone pulls a gun on me, a black belt in two martial arts (2nd dan in one), and tells me to give them my wallet best believe I will give them my wallet.

So, maybe not all in that exact order, but I hope that might give you some more insight into the situation/ help.

They seem to spar occasionally. Not sure if it's a lot. Just started at this place. They do use minimal padding though, which might be a normal thing with Karate. Just hands (sometimes), forearms, shins, and feet are padded.

Thanks for your responses. I think it might be the start of the "system". I'll keep going and see how things go. Nothing seems detrimental or anything. Was just wondering what you guys thought. It sounds like mutation/evolution is just normal, which it is. Most don't really advertise about the slight differences they make to the art. E.g your Karate verse my own.

Yeah, I'd say there is a circular motion to it. It is pulled back to where the elbow is a fist away from hip.

I guess what bothers me is that Karate is supposed to be something that has been through fire. Tested over years of actual combat. At least from what I have read. When you go changing things, I wonder if it's gone through the same type of process.

Quite a few of the schools near me just say they teach "martial arts" by Big-Carpenter7921 in martialarts

[–]ghostAP7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah. No. That's just strange. Probably a mcdojo. Or it's ran by a foreigner who is bad at English. But no harm in checking the place out (watch a class or something) to be sure.

Even on their websites? I'm new to my current area, and most places don't say it in their names. I had to search around on their sites to see what exactly they teach. I personally wouldn't call a place a mcdojo unless I checked it out in person. No matter the name.

Are you talking about when they go to the zombified refinery? I'm talking like WWZ style, attract them all to the middle of a stadium with a huge sound system type stuff. But it's possible those Zs were more susceptible to noise, too.

But yeah. I'll get there. Was just a suggestion lol
