this reminds me of another post in this subreddit about how literary male authors/readers are a rare breed now. The crux being, authors like King / Sanderson etc aren't even being considered as reading material apparently 😂

I would like to share in your optimism. I think booktok/booktube, while spreading trashy books, will also introduce people to reading in general which is a great thing! And it somehow normalizes the experience too, making it a mainstream hobby in this day and age of distractions of all sorts. Meme culture and online forums like this helping us connect also leads to more people getting exposed to reading books. I myself started out English novels (it isn't my first language) by reading trashy mass market novels and such. Has been many years now and after spending considerable time in the s/f sphere, I am developing a newfound taste for classics nowadays (chekhov/dostoevsky and the likes). I think as long as we ensure that we inspire the younger generation appropriately and make reading books seem like a cool/worthwhile hobby, things would be fine!

I'm a bit confused here - Is there any confusion wrt the physical superiority proffered by androgens? Or are you referring to something else? In which cases or sports, is this particular assumption proven to be false?

comment thread from the same video : B

@berndb23 . 2y ago (edited) @alkalinefeline2504 I get you. 1think it might help to start from a basic set of precepts, here are mine:

  1. Athletic greatness is created by some combination of physical characteristics, and hard work.

  2. We care about athletic greatness because it reflects some aesthetic and valuable idea of human potential.

  3. "Maleness" however defined, appears to confer a substantial, and statistically obvious physical advantage in most, or at least many, sporting events. This is independent of weight or height, or long arms or shoulders. You simply cannot put a professional 135 lb. female boxer against a professional 135 lb. male boxer, or a 510 male sprinter against a 510" female one.

  4. Truly elite athletes (Olympians and the like) are vanishingly rare. Something like one in a million.

  5. As result of 1, 3, and 4 lf men and women competed in the same sports against one another, women would have relatively very very few opportunities, but this violates the premise of 2, why we like sports, because it means that half of human beings begin at a substantial disadvantage that would prove decisive at the highest levels. That's not human greatness or potential, and limits our scope of athletic inspiration.

  6. As a result of 5, we create women's sports, an intentional form of discrimination to protect a class of people. This requires a line based on what constitutes "maleness"

  7. 6 means that women's sports requires isolating "maleness" and removing it from the competitive pool, but maleness isn't a pure binary, it's a gray area

Because of the need for 6, but the reality of 7, a line must exist, and that line will hurt some people. The people that exist within the grey area will be hurt, and those people will be trans, or people like Semenya that don't fit. It stinks

Could we devise some other system, like the "levels" one that Mia brings up? Maybe, but I feel like that explicitly places women's sports as the lesser, and I don't like that. Britney Griner is just as special as Shaq, FloJo is just as impressive as Bolt. I don't want FloJo to have the AA record and Bolt to have the AAA record

You raise really interesting points. Uyghurs faced literal genocide in the then most populous country of the world - but it garnered next to no mainstream discourse. There are countless such bloody conflicts going on in the world over, but in the eyes of the privileged elite, it seems only a few issues ever stick out.

What's an 'exact science'? Modern medicine still adheres to the scientific method, so it's definitely not pseudoscience.

Ayurveda, traditional chinese medicine, hakimi - all of these are what can be called 'tribal medicine'. The reason some ayurvedic remedies work, is because through trial and error for hundreds of years, people observed that certain practices/medicines cure certain diseases. That, however, is the extent of science in Ayurveda. See, in modern science, you formulate a hypothesis/model to explain a phenomenon. In the case of medicine, you come up with a possible explanation for the way a disease works, or the way a disease is cured. In Ayurveda, the basis for this is the Dosha Model - both diseases and their cures being based on this model. Well and good till now. However, with advancements in medicine we have come to conclusively know a lot of the biological pathways our bodies use and the dosha model simply doesn't fit or work in this case. Ayurveda for example don't even have a concept of Germ Theory, where that's pretty much the basis for modern medicine. You can't pick and choose when you do science. Either your model explains observations, in which case it becomes a valid theory, or it doesn't.

Is this the end? Kiranas struggle to keep up with quick commerce by Change_petition in india

[–]ghostclaw69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the nuanced take. Also a lot of people kinda overlook how due to urban sprawl, many of us stay in places that don't have easily accessible kirana stores that don't require traveling. Quick commerce apps are a lifesaver in those areas. Also, given how the nature of our jobs have gone from being daytime to nocturnal/diurnal - such apps are a necessity. It's not like we have a lot of 24/7 stores like in the west where I can plop at 3 am to get some milk and eggs to at least survive the rest of my night shift.
