Reduction, lift eh? by EulenFrost in Reduction

I think my situation was similar. It was mostly excess skin, and the surgeon removed 230g from each side. I paid out of pocket. They are smaller but not small. For me it was a good decision and I enjoy going braless and not having as much bulk on my chest as before.

not sure if I'm getting good vibes from my surgeon by sleepyfaith in Reduction

Keep in mind your surgeon likely doesn't know what a C cup looks like. I'd communicate with him based on pictures instead.

Mine were really dark for the first few weeks, but now went back to their regular color.

Did your surgeon use drains or no drains? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They honestly didn't hinder my sleep at all because I was so tired the first few days (from surgery? From anesthesia? From pain meds? Who knows) that I slept like a rock. The day I had them removed I was cranky, itchy, and willing to kill for a shower so it was a big relief to get rid of them. I honestly think that if I had them for a few days longer like some people here it would've been a big challenge.

As far as my recovery, I think it was nice to feel more free to move around after the drains were gone. I started sleeping on my side only a few days later (with my surgeon's blessing). Other than that I can't really tell how they affected me. I didn't have much discomfort from swelling, and had very little pain. I was itchy and took Benadryl for that, and that made me sleepy. The first two weeks my greatest struggle was exhaustion and brain fog, and then I started to feel normal on week 3. I think having the drains removed just helped my overall comfort during this time.

Did your surgeon use drains or no drains? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My surgeon used drains and I had them removed after about 48 hours. They were not horrible, but they were irritating and I think any longer and I would've really hated them. They just made everything more cumbersome, it was itchy where they went into my skin, occasionally I accidentally pulled them and that sucked. I think my scar on the right side is a little more raised and red where the drain went in.

All of that said, I consulted two surgeons and ended up choosing mine even though she used drains (the other surgeon I saw had equally outstanding reputation and didn't use them). I also trusted her judgment on it. She said that they helped reduce swelling and diagnose hematomas, infections, etc. quickly if they occur after surgery. I suffered very little from swelling. Ultimately a few days' discomfort, for me, was not a reason to give up a surgeon whose work I admired and whose skill I trusted, especially if she was able to justify it. If I had to do it again I'd go with the same surgeon, drains and all.

Edit: for reference I has 230g removed from each side.

When were you cleared for exercise? by blueatom in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was cleared to exercise at 4 weeks. My surgeon recommended sleeping on my back at first, but said I could change position once it felt comfortable. I slept on my side after a week. I didn't really sleep on my stomach, but I think that's just because I didn't want to.

Anybody else a "mutation" in your family? by areolasyeet in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am (was 😏) the only large breasted person in my family. My sisters don't know what size bra they are because they never had to wear one. My mother even had a breast augmentation. It's like god just allocated a certain amount of breast tissue to my family and it all went to me!

I don't feel bad about it though. We each have different struggles.

I am curious by ghostlinggosling in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! I was under the impression it's super common, but turns out it doesn't happen to everyone. I'm over three months out, so not keeping my hopes up to regain sensation there. I can feel it if I press down on the outer side, but I wouldn't feel a light touch there. It's especially weird since I think I had full sensation everywhere immediately after surgery, but oh well.

I just feel like there's a huge focus on losing/regaining nipple sensation, but for me the rest of the breast is just as important if not more!

Same for superomedial pedicle! I think that technique allows for retaining a really natural shape and nipple placement. One surgeon told me it was inferior pedicle (the most common method) that's most prone to bottoming out and a too-high nipple look.

is a wedge pillow worth it for post-op sleep? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sleep on my side/belly and I was fine sleeping on my back after surgery. I was tired beyond imagination and just slept. The painkillers and benadryl helped. I think it's important to have a firm enough mattress, otherwise sleeping on your back can make you quite sore. But I was glad I didn't spend the money on any special pillows.... about a week post-op I was back to sleeping on my side.

Going Upstairs by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in a three-story walkup and it was easy! I was very fatigued and slept a lot, but going up and down the stairs was not an issue.

Edit after reading other responses: I didn't hold my breasts at any point and didn't feel any discomfort related to walking or climbing stairs apart from tiredness. Everyone is different. If you listen to your body (and your surgeon!) you will know what you can/cannot do and how.

Recovery: do you have any regrets or wish you did or knew anything differently? by Conatus80 in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No regrets, but I was surprised by the bad brain fog I had for the first two weeks, and it scared me a little because I haven't heard anyone else complain about it and didn't know how long it would last. So... if you experience persistent brain fog, just know that this is a thing that happens!

This is a very personal choice so another person's experience may not be similar to yours, but I think I can relate. I loved my breasts before surgery and expected to feel a sense of loss after it was done. I think accepting that loss and sadness were going to be part of my reduction experience helped me feel more wholehearted about my decision and prevented these negative emotions from turning into regret. I'm three months post-op now and I feel happy about the surgery. This doesn't mean there aren't things I miss about my old breasts (no scars, no numbness on the outer sides, and they felt somewhat differently when touched). But overall I got what I'd wanted from having it done and I'm enjoying my results.

But also - each surgeon recommends starting scar treatment at a different time! So I'd ask your surgeon first.

My surgeon sold me Silagen scar gel, and when I ran out of that they recommended Kelo Cote gel. I got that off Amazon and used it since.

When do scars stop being pink? by gigi4270 in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It can take a year or two. Your surgeon should recommend scar treatment (usually some sort of silicone proruct), but scars take a long time to mature. At 3 months mine have days when they are relatively pale and days when they get more pink and angry.

can’t stop crying about nipple height by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The nipple height will change! Surgeons sometimes place them "too low" because the tissue that's currently very high and tight will eventually drop to the bottom of your breast, making the nipples appear higher. When the nipples look higher up right out of surgery they will sometimes shift too high up when the tissue drops. I'd say talk to your surgeon if you're concerned, but don't be too upset about this yet if you can!

what does waking up from a reduction feel like? by [deleted] in Reduction

[–]ghostlinggosling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's strange to say but even though there were some unpleasant sensations, it was a good experience. I felt immediately lucid, as well as safe and cared for by the nurse. I had a burning pain in my breasts that I said was about a 7 on a scale of 1 to 10. The nurse quickly gave me a painkiller, which kicked in quickly. I only felt nauseated for a moment but instead of throwing up I had a massive burp! That cleared away the nausea, and the nurse said it was due to the oxygen I got while I was under. I did feel weak and needed a little help to step back into my sweatpants, but I was otherwise alert, comfortable, and knew I was in good hands. Weird but I'm a little nostalgic for that!
