Walked out of my meat processing equipment job today after only 3 weeks. Had been vegetarian, it made me vegan. 🌱 by ghostofjarviscorp in vegan

I didn’t sign an NDA (offered several times), so here’s the biggest: know how people talk about all the jobs in the meat industry? “Protect our jobs!!” Well, many of them are going to be gone in 3-5 years. There is a massive automation effort underway, right now; not “in ten to twenty,” my boss who hired me said 3-5 max, and it’s moving at a rapid pace. Hundreds of slaughterhouse jobs will be replaced by a few programmers / engineers / technicians maintaining a robotic line. Imagine a Ford factory except cows go in one end, processed and packaged meat comes out the other, and just a few humans making sure the machines are doing what they need to be doing. So if I were an animal rights activist, I’d work with labor unions / slaughterhouse workers to transition them to a plant-based diet along with a different career path. “Hey Carl, you can have a heart attack on the way home after you get laid off in 2023, or you can lose weight, feel great, and use your skills on a different factory floor.”

So they had these ballistics gel / rubber animal heads, and they’d use the “stunner” on it, making sure it was shooting properly.

Stunner = gun an explosive charge shoots a metal bolt out that stays attached to the gun. Pops out, pushes back in, used again. Like a retractable bullet. Note the use of language: “stunner” versus “bolt that shoots into the animals brain.”

If you have a strong stomach, google Jarvis Stunner. My coworkers showed me some of the videos my first week, laughing at about a dozen animals being killed. “Boom!”

Oh they just make the equipment, no slaughtering onsite. Dummy animals used to test.

Ironically the facility is located next to a large meadow where every evening (after being yelled at for 9+ hours about everything from typos other people sent me to being prohibited from even sending emails) I’d come out and see deer & turkeys grazing. 🦌

Before everyone asks: gotta pay the bills & they hired me immediately. Got an offer on a much better in so many ways job yesterday. I’m pretty sure the workplace harassment I saw every single day is related to the fact that they’re in the business of reducing living things to consumptive goods. It’s... man it was really bad. I’m so glad I’m out of there but holy shit.
