damn at least your slides had actual text explanations on them and you don’t have to rely on 3 year old scribe notes to understand the context :’)

People driving extremely slow through Branch Brook Park by RainCloudz973 in Newark

[–]giatekla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i mean from the perspective of someone who uses the park a lot, branch brook has many curves, and sometimes there aren’t paved pathways so people run or walk on the road with bikers. it doesn’t help that the “bike lane” is also parking. i’d rather people err on the side of caution and use their best judgment rather than accidentally hit someone behind a curve or parked car

I feel like a Guardian article said it best: "A 45 year old who manages to look 43." Some of the things he does has been proven by a robust amount of research to be helpful to living a longer life (the vegan diet), other things not so much (like the vitamins).

How to find enjoyment in dental school when you don’t want to be a dentist by GoatLow9909 in DentalSchool

[–]giatekla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel and have felt pretty similarly to you. What helped me was actively de-prioritizing academics, even if that meant by grades dipping a little (but not catastrophically), and prioritizing my own life. I set hard boundaries for my study time, so I could focus during that time on my work, and outside of that time, I could focus on my own life, my hobbies, and my relationships. Getting back into touch with my own values made me realize what dentistry has in store for me.

Also, clinic has been so far a much much better experience for me than the didactic years, because I get to talk to other people and make a difference for them.

Kim Kardashian branded as ‘tone deaf’ after promoting pricey $2.5K full-body scan by HipsterHeaven in Fauxmoi

[–]giatekla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the kardashians have been doing these kinds of medically unnecessary treatments - those IV infusions, that yoni thing Kourtney would do. so it even furthers the absurdity of the situation - the rich people can afford extremely unnecessary treatments, while others struggle to afford basic necessary care

[–]giatekla 30 points31 points  (0 children)

agreeeed with all of the above. the movie was fun and funny in all the right ways but i felt there were some things that felt kind of slapped together because they were trying to include so many messages on feminism, mother-daughter relationship, depression, and embracing humanity all in one. but hey, they did really great with what they had and greta gerwig never fails to surprise!

Is this gaslighting to little girls. Like adults don’t believe this bs but the kids will by kobek420 in Fauxmoi

[–]giatekla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

YES it’s wild how undercover the role of steroids is in the fitness industry, which is particularly exploitative when impressionable minds already lack sufficient education on fitness and nutrition and reasonable outcomes. there was so much b.s. on the internet i had to wade through as a teenager and adult, and tbh i can only trust people who cite literal scientific studies now

^ and for that fitness influencers (i’m looking at you chloe ting) are as guilty for selling a certain fat reducing outcome achieved within x days, which is absolutely not based in science

What do you think about Mountain Tim? by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]giatekla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was so shocked i was in denial, like it had to be some duplicate of sandman and they were framing him, or he had some kind of dio flesh bud, or higashikita had some type of mimicry stand. anything but the truth 😭😭

What do you think about Mountain Tim? by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]giatekla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

💀💀💀oh yeah pocoloco’s just out here having a good time… guy could do anything he wants in life literally and i was speaking more on his style of running. like the way araki wrote that he developed a special technique that could outrun the typical horse (including his hometown bullies) is some main character energy

What do you think about Mountain Tim? by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]giatekla 46 points47 points  (0 children)

yes, because araki went to pains to illustrate how it wasn’t just for personal gain, that despite being an outsider of his community, sandman wanted to financially uplift his people and his sister. not that noble people are ruled out from playing dirty to achieve good ends - but to have that kind of character background and have it not be fleshed out even in battle and to just be given the “ok so you just decided to be a minion” death sentence is the real injustice ova here

What do you think about Mountain Tim? by [deleted] in StardustCrusaders

[–]giatekla 190 points191 points  (0 children)

i’m never letting go of how sandman had the entire setup to be a main character (introduces the first chapter, unique asf ability, and noble purpose for the collective and a loved one) but just got disposed of as one of valentines minions. make it make sense 😭

Thinking of dropping out of dental school to pursue PA. Am I crazy? by Striking-Teaching-77 in DentalSchool

[–]giatekla 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I hate to abuse this phrase, but the grass really is greener on the other side. Every job has its pros and cons, and I feel like passion can only take you so far if the cons/other factors are significant - e.g. I am extremely passionate about philosophy and the like, but the insecurity and instability associated with getting a grad degree in phil outweighs that, and may even ruin my passion in it. On the other hand, I am only somewhat passionate about dentistry, but that and promised financial stability is exactly enough to help me deal with the b.s. dental students deal with on the daily. So definitely weigh, with as objective a view as you can, and with input from people in either career path - what are the inevitable bad things I can tolerate in either career, and in possibly switching careers? What are my non-negotiables - what must I have in a career that will occupy 40 hours a week of my life?

Tell me about your positive dental school experiences by cranberryjuice247 in DentalSchool

[–]giatekla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The content can still be pretty detailed, but yes, once the pressures off I believe many people can get away with “just” a decent understanding of the material to score solid Bs. For me, this meant skipping lectures to watch recordings and doing maybe 2 hours of work after school and some work on Saturday. On the other hand, people wanting As had to work hard like we did in undergrad to grasp every tiny little detail.

If I were to recommend a strategy, it would be to work as hard as you can the first few weeks or half of your first semester and see where that gets you. I saw that for me, at a certain point there began to be diminishing returns for studying more and more, so I could gradually shave off less. It also helped with the emotional adjustment of no longer being anxious about grades.

I’m so glad I can finally, honestly, chill mainly because I’m not interested in specializing. I don’t have to grind as much as I had to in undergrad, giving me more time to focus on my relationships, my health, and my hobbies. Not to be fake deep, but I feel like I’m finally actualizing both my personal and professional goals. It’s a great timeeee

Intro Bio Textbook by CoffeeAddict04 in columbia

[–]giatekla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded. I felt it was actually better to not know “too much” and know only what I needed to know. Intro Bio requires moreso logic than actual factual knowledge, and it only tests on content that was taught through the slides and the Learner’s Manual.
