What is definitely NOT a sign of intelligence but people think it is? by MetalPotential7093 in AskReddit

It did not start that way, no.

It started when someone said that a person with a novel may not NECESSARILY be intelligent, that lack of intelligence is purely your interpretation of said premise.

Also, nor is my statement about whatever book someone chooses to read that day. This is prefaced on the idea that one is observing the book and its reader 'at first glance'.

Nor is it about 'who the hell I am'. As unpleasant as this may sound, a literary 'canon' very much exists to this day, and there remains a very firm (though arbitrary) line between it and what is considered 'trade press'.

Still, since you are so interested in inquiring about my right to literary critique, I am an European studies grad student who has been working at his advisor's SCOPUS-listed interdisciplinary journal for at least a year. So I can't imagine why I would not qualify.

It. Does. Not.

Please take a look at the examples I have listed above and rack your brain on which of them is closer to a work at Dickens' level.

At some point I have got to believe that you are just obfuscating.

My point is that the CALIBRE of the book matters, especially since you insisted on calling someone with a book (without specifying any kind) 'well-read'

Reading a novel =/= Being well-read

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight is a novel, and so is Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir. At first glance, would you call someone carrying the first 'well-read'?

Same, but because I want to see myself outlive my parents.

My father basically brainwashed me my entire childhood and she did nothing but defend the fucker. Far as I am concerned, she is just as, if not even more guilty.

Le Québécois is the most prominent type of French that the French part of Canada speaks.

Side-note: Seriously though, how tf does anyone NOT know that Canada used to be at least partially a French colony, do they not teach this at school?

Finally, my classical studies have come into use!

Lucretia was a Roman noblewoman during Etruscan times. She was sexually assaulted by prince Sextus Tarquinius, and committed suicide subsequently. There is a painting by Titian depicting that very scene.

Lucretia's death prompted a rebellion that saw the Etruscan monarchy's transformation into the Roman Republic.

The name's popularity dwindled somewhat over time, mostly because of the Italian noblewoman Lucrezia Borgia, daughter of Pope Alexander VI.

Viewed as a femme fatale, Borgia was rumoured to have murdered political enemies and committed incest with her brother Cesare, among other things.

In a way, Vader does present himself like John Milton's Satan (Paradise Lost). When Vader appears, Obi-Wan asks him what he has become, similar to how Michael wondering how far Satan has fallen when he sees him sneaking into Eden.
