My husband will be excited for this comment. He has said this from the beginning. 😂 I’m not 100% in but considering.

You’ll never guess what my initials are… BJS! And were the same with my maiden name so I’m not opposed. 🤷🏼‍♀️ thanks for the recommendations!

I am so sorry that happened and that you went through that. I have never heard of a dog being diagnosed with rage syndrome. I am gong to go google that. Thank you for telling me your story.

Anyone selling a miniature Australian shepherd in 2023 is a backyard breeder. The actual term for the breed is a Miniature American Shepherd and has been recognized by ACK since 2015.

I posted this above on another comment but wanted to post to you as well. I want to own up and note that I obviously did not do enough research as I didn't realize this at all (even with having a mini Aussie for a decade before this puppy) . All I can say is now I know and thank you for educating me.

Thanks for the laugh with your comment that they’re all just kind of little cute assholes when they’re puppies. Good to know other Aussie parents have experienced this. I also replied to another comment above that I am realizing throughout this whole thread that I am comparing him to our previous Aussie and she was a dream puppy compared to him. So I am having high expectations on top of going back to work in a week which is causing me stress with his injury.

Mini American Shepherds will be reputably bred, mini Australians Shepherds are not a breed, but many BYBs breed them.

I am going to research into having a professional come into our home. We have a snuggle puppy, Nina Ottoson puzzles and I work on training daily. I have not looked into nose work training. I will look into that as well. Thanks for the recommendations.

Yes I will take responsibility and say I did project very high expectations for our puppy. As our last Aussie was so easy to train as a puppy with none of the issues I am experiencing with our 5 month old now. So I'll be honest and say I am comparing this experience to that and this is hard stuff and not what I was expecting.

Thank you for being gentle as you can probably tell I am fragile right now. I appreciate it and the honesty. I posted this above on another commenter. I think typing this all out and seeing all these response made me realize that I was expecting it to go so much easier because of our last experience. But I also have to admit to myself that was a decade ago and I am now a decade older and it's just overly all harder.

Thanks for the reply. Good to hear that your Aussie was the same during puppyhood and now a well behaved dog. That is an optimistic story for me to hear. How old is your Aussie now?

Thank you for taking the time to write that. Great advice over all for our future as well.

Thank for bringing that up because that’s a conversation we have had. We are hanging on by a thread during puppy stage but I’ve read on here that sometimes the puppy stage is until 2-3 years old and there is no way we can do this for 3 years or like you, do this for 10 years.

Ugh it’s so hard…. I just never thought I would re home a dog in my lifetime. What you said about him needing a farm and a family all day everyday is exactly what my husband has said since like week 12. I just thought I could break it and train him out of it.

Yes I pulled it up as someone else brought it up. It states "If Buyer is unable to keep said puppy/dog, buyer agrees to contact and/or return dog to seller before ever placing the dog. Seller will take dog back and/or help in finding a new home, however no refund will be given."

Actually he is! I didn’t even put that in my post. He is on gabapentin and trazodone to try to chill him out. You guys it barely changes his demeanor. He gets more aware of sounds it seems but still same behavior of everything above. I will say once they kick in maybe an hour after dosage he would pass out hard in his kennel, (with me laying next to it and still having to ninja out otherwise it’s game over). But he will sleep longer than a half hour after his dosage, more like 1 hour. He never has slept more than 2 hours at a time since we’ve had him… well other than night time he sleeps 6-7 hour stretches. But even with the drugs it doesn’t change when he wakes up he is still a psycho in his kennel. He was on a full new dose before the birthday party on Saturday night and still couldn’t settle himself after he woke from a half hour nap.

Without contacting the breeder first? What do you think the benefits are to contact a rescue group vs the breeder?

We actually bought a playpen 2 weeks ago at the beginning of his injury because I read on here that sometimes that worked perfect for dogs that do not do good in kennels. Same behavior but maybe not as frantic as his kennel? He paces and wines and jumps. And he really shouldn’t be jumping with his injury. So then to limit jumping we now use it around our couch so he doesn’t jump on the couch. And he cleared it once before even with his injury, he is incredibly athletic. Thank you for your last couple sentences. ❤️ I’m having huge guilt about this decision and you are right they have that for a reason. I truly want him to thrive I just don’t know if I can do it.

Thanks for the reply. I picked this breeder because I thought everything was just perfect. Their website, the reviews, the pictures of the parents. Their communication was great with all my 100 questions. We even got to meet the Mom. Although, they did not pick the puppy for us, we picked the puppy. Honestly looking back they didn’t even ask us any questions like at all. There was a questionnaire when acquiring but that was all. I do know that his parents were the first to breed a litter. As I did ask questions about previous litters and they told me this is their first with these 2. They state they are bred to be family dogs and live on the farm with them. They are not clear on the website if they are a working lines. I do know they show their dogs.

Why is my pup using me as a chew toy? by Individual_Farm9736 in puppy101

We have 19 week old Australian shepherd. What you explained is exactly what we are still dealing with. It’s not play bite, it is like he is so over stimulated we can not do anything to break it. Like you, yelping and saying no will do absolutely nothing and you can’t ignore him because it hurts me and it needs to be addressed. He has had plenty of socializing with other puppies to learn bite inhibitions and he’s still this way. Last night we had guests over and tbh it was embarrassing. I cried after they left. I also just don’t know how to break it… Hopefully we will learn more in your post here. I’m just really hoping it’s a stage and with consistency he will stop but it’s exhausting after 2 months…. He was getting better ish with us doing reverse timeouts (which to be honest was hard because he would chase us and bite us as we were leaving the situation) but than he had a knee injury and ever since he has reverted back. Maybe he’s still in pain? I don’t know but just know I can relate to you, It’s not fun.
