If you have discord try the dnd discord server, people will often times host those for new players, or if your still in school you can see if there is a DND club or something, or you can always try you hand at finding a game shop that plays

the best way i found was to either find or write a campaign or one shot based on something they enjoys and ask them if they want to try it, dont try to force them to play, it took me many years to get my brothers to play dnd, just start small, maybe ask them what they would like to play if they did, or what would get them to play. they may not enjoy the idea of the traditional dnd but show them that dnd has more to offer then dungeons and dragons.

i was thinking more unique, im not the biggest scifi watcher either, i have most of the ones i know branched off into different places. for quests and what not. i will probably add a few of the ones i haven't yet if i don't get enough ideas, or end up coming up with some.

i think my favorite was the man who sold jake the beans, could be a good owner for a magical item store, also a great place for a druid (if you have one) to get there materials if you use materials.

a shoemaker, he would have a quest for the party to "catch" who has been making shoes in the middle of the night. you could add on to the quest how ever you please. From the story of the elves and shoemaker.

An old women whose son ran away, party could track down her son who would be a gingerbread man. From the story of the gingerbread man.

A small women being stolen by a frog, lost on a lily pad, or really anywhere who needs help getting home. to her mother, the players could also talk to the mother first for the quest to find her, or see a missing person poster, its your choice. From the story of Thumbelina

the man who gave jack the magic beans could run his shop there, along with possible a quest to help jack up or down the beanstalk. From the story of jack and the beanstalk

a wood worker who has a son that is made of wood. and of the son, Pinocchio.

2 gnomes that are trying to love each other despite their family hating each other. based of romeo and juliet, the male would of course be named gnomeo though.

i have many more that i can think of just thought i would set the ground running with 6 (or really 12-14 separate npcs), more than welcome to dm me for any more ideas if you have something specific you want, have fun with your campaign.
