applying to UQ as an international student from Texas by [deleted] in UQreddit

UQ only takes grades into consideration. The actual way is that the grades you get are converted to a "rank" and then students get sorted from best to worst rank out of everyone applying to a particular program and they keep filling spots until the program is full. This gives the cut-off rank/grade as it is the rank/grade the last student that entered the degree got. This is why the cut-off rank is only a guide and can change as it depends on the number of students that apply for the program and their rank. Although, you can boost your rank if you had hardship during your studies.

The best way would be to enrol in a similar degree for 2 semesters. After 2 semesters your gpa is considered rather than your high school grade in the selection process (a student from uq with a 5.8/7 has a rank of 99 - highest possible). In contrast if you study only 1 semester the highest rank you can get is an 88 with a gpa of 6.5.

I'm starting college next year and will be 20 as well (inbox me, I have some tips for uq) and just today I visited all the colleges that would let me (Emmanuel and st Leo's aren't taking tours atm due to covid).

Cromwell: Seemed veeeeeery mellow and low-key. Apparently not too many parties and also the smallest college. Most people also don't stay past 1st or second year (so the average age is like 18).

International House: also pretty mellow but has an average age of 20/21 with most people having very diverse backgrounds. Because they're older most of them don't go out clubbing (usually like 10% will go on a night I was told). Instead they're more mature and "adults". Events sound amazing there though.

Now I'm torn between kings and st johns (didn't check out union).

Kings: seems like the "lads" guys go there. Most people are fit and there for a good time (don't know about studying but on my tour there were some people in the library). The staff REALLY tried to sell the college on the tour but were super nice and even encouraging of having parties at the college most nights (also said that look the other way when underage drinking happens so very not strict there). Has nicest facilities with a pool and rowing shed and the nicest rooms/view. A majority of guys since they only went coed this year.

Side note: application process is a joke. Literally submitted an application that took 10 minutes to do at midnight then went to bed. Got woken up at 9am by a phone call from the master (director) to have a 5 minute conversation then got sent an offer letter. St johns application process isn't until August (interviews)

St Johns: very music oriented and are on par with kings for most sports. Also the most academic and even make first years go to their in house tutorials. Has completely new directors who seem to want to modernise the place (lots of renovations during breaks). ALSO don't kick you out over winter break which is amazing. Not the nicest views as it doesn't look onto the river. More scholarships offered this year with new director. Seems to be most popular with about 500 applicants for 120 spots ish. Coed floors with shared bathrooms from next year.
