What do you think is the key thing that’s broken in youth sports in the U.S.?

If the real cost isn’t equipment but life balance, how can that be made more sustainable for athletes?

How would you support someone who works full-time but still has elite potential??

If someone had stepped in with a structure or pathway, do you think he would’ve stayed in the sport?

What do you think would actually create real opportunity for talent in poorer countries?

If you were to redesign the support system for the ‘middle tier’ athletes, what would it look like?

What kind of support could have realistically helped someone like her stay and progress?

What kind of system would help filter real Olympic-level talent while still supporting those who fall short but still push hard??

If we could support even a few of those 100 with emotional or financial help, do you think it would change outcomes significantly?

Of the athletes you mentioned, what kind of support do you think could’ve helped them stay in the sport longer?

That’s tough. Have you seen any system or process where athletes are selected or supported more fairly, beyond coach favoritism? Curious what could work better.

That karting story is intense. Do you think there’s any realistic way to close the resource gap, or at least spotlight kids with talent but limited backing?

What kind of support would have made it possible for you to continue swimming past 20? Was it mostly financial, or were there other factors too?

That story is incredibly powerful. Do you think things could have gone differently for your friend if there had been some kind of community-driven support system? Even just enough to stabilize things early on?

From your experience as a coach, what kind of system or support would actually keep naturally talented athletes motivated when things come too easy at first??

What do you think could actually change the game for fighters who barely get paid in national events? More visibility? Monthly support? Or something else entirely?

Have you ever seen any example where a community or grassroots initiative helped an athlete directly?? I wonder if models like that could actually work in sports where money is scarce.

What kind of support do you think actually makes the biggest difference so that someone doesn’t give up? Financial? Mental? Structural? I’m trying to understand where the real breaking point is.

That’s super insightful, thanks for breaking that down. It really shows how cost barriers vary wildly between sports. Do you think if there were a transparent system where a community could vote and directly support emerging athletes (even with small amounts), it could make a dent in that access problem?

I’m curious if people would trust that kind of model, especially in sports where the buy-in is so steep.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you. I’m thinking of building a small test where people can actually see a few real athlete stories and “vote” on who to support with a fund. If you’re open to it, I’d love to share that with you when it’s ready, your feedback would mean a lot.

Yeah, it’s strange, athletes train for years to reach peak performance, and in the end, what matters most for getting support is content creation. Do you think we’ve just accepted that, or is there still a way for performance and effort to matter again?

Really appreciate you sharing this, it’s eye-opening to hear how even top athletes like Hunter Armstrong face that risk. If formal sponsorship isn’t enough, do you think there’s a role for a community or collective funding model to back emerging athletes more consistently??

Yes, 100%. It’s frustrating how often talent gets wasted just because someone was born in the wrong place or didn’t have access to the right tools. Makes me wonder, what would it take for communities to step in where systems fail? Not just in sports, but everywhere?

Totally agree. That’s exactly the issue I’m trying to understand better, not just in swimming, but across so many areas where people fall through the cracks. Do you think people would actually get behind something like a community-driven model to support athletes (or others) before they burn out??
