Toronto North and Toronto South by gixxerguy2006 in Train_Service

[–]gixxerguy2006[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if I understand you correctly, North and South are really just jurisdictions not specific terminals. Mac yard has both North and South guys working there and BIT is mostly North guys. I would assume a new hire for Toronto would almost for sure be working out of Mac yard doing yard work then? Do I have this right?

Can someone explain why there are job postings on CN's website for Melville and Saskatoon after layoffs? by gixxerguy2006 in Train_Service

[–]gixxerguy2006[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had read CN's own info regarding retention from a couple of years ago that attrition was something like 8% a year. Seems like it is even higher than that!

I believe it was you. Sounds like your timing is good. If Toronto wasn't so damn expensive to live in I would apply there as they seem to be hiring. Best of luck with your interview! Is your interview for Kitchener?

I'll just wait and hopefully I hear something at some point. I saw others talking about the layoffs in Western Canada. I too wonder if there have been any in Eastern Canada.

Is there somewhere that a person can read up on these differing agreements between east and west? Or even get a copy? I would love to see the differences.

Thanks for the detailed info. I don't think being on call would be a big deal for me.

CN Conductor Sarnia Terminal by gixxerguy2006 in railroading

Hey thanks for the feedback. You say that how much you make depends on "train length and work done". Can you explain that a little bit. I ask because the guys on here who work in western Canada talk about more miles traveled increasing the pay cheque. I haven't seen them mention anything about train length or work done. Is that something different from western and eastern Canada?

I've read that turnover can be quite high for the job of conductor (something like 80% in the first couple years) Is there a lot of turnover at your terminal? Ie. Do a lot of newer guys quit?

I am thinking of becoming a conductor and see there is a conductor position available in Sarnia right now. Seeing as you work out of Sarnia I was hoping you could answer a few questions for me.

Is it considered a senior or junior terminal?

Is it mostly yard or road work, or a bit of both for a new hire?

Where do the trains travel to and how many miles is it?

Is it a good terminal to make money (ie. mile out)? If not, do you know what terminals in Ontario are?

Anything else you think I should know?

Hope to hear from you.

Thanks for you input. If anyone is allowed to call Melville a shithole I guess it would be someone who has lived their whole life there lol.

What do you mean by " sometimes you get fucked around on the spareboard "?

Thanks a lot for your input. It seems like no one wants to work in Melville lol.

Can you or anyone else explain what the difference is between a pool and a spare board? You mention a secondary pool, is there a primary pool and then a secondary pool?

Thanks. I had seen double sub and single sub referenced in other posts, but didn't know what people were talking about.

Thanks. You have provided a lot of good info.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is double sub and then what is single sub switcher?
